From writer/director Jon Stewart comes the comedy of a Democrat political consultant (Carell) who helps a retired Marine colonel (Cooper) run for mayor in a small Wisconsin town.

O…kay?

Look, we love it when Rose Byrne gets to be funny (she’s way better at it than she sometimes gets credit for), and we think she and Carrell have some obvious chemistry onscreen, but everything about this premise feels so … dated and simplistic. Which is perhaps not surprising, given that Jon Stewart wrote and directed it. Oh, yes. We went there. Love the guy and the work he did on The Daily Show, but we never saw him as someone who had a nuanced grasp of American politics and so far, this trailer, with its all-white cast and its “Democrats are grasping elitists and Republicans are smooth liars” both-sidesism feels quaint three months into a national health crisis and two weeks into the biggest and longest sustained racial protest marches in American history. It’s not Stewart’s fault that such paradigm-shifting events happened before his film opened, but that doesn’t change the impression that this script was written circa 2014.

We don’t know… we hate to poop all over someone’s efforts without seeing the final product, but nothing about this seems to appeal to us and we didn’t so much as crack a smile during the trailer.
