Met Gala 2019: A Small Passel of Passable Chers

Since Cher and her legendary designer Bob Mackie were a big part of the Costume Institute’s exhibit we expected there to be a decent number of Cher cosplay attempts on the red carpet – especially since it allows those gals out there who’d rather look hot than campy a decent route toward sticking with the theme. To our surprise, there weren’t as many Chers as we thought. To these ladies’ credit, they did a pretty good job of representing.

That’s pretty much perfect Cher drag, paying homage or pulling inspiration from a bunch of Mackie looks, using the tropes of classic Cher style (exposed midsection, beaded lace/sheer, dramatic-af hair and tons of feathers) while not being exact copy of a Cher look.

This is in the same vein; a perfect pastiche of a whole bunch of classic Cher looks.

It’s possible we’re being incredibly generous putting the two Jenners in with this lot, but Cher’s actually kind of an iconic figure to the larger Kardashian clan and we have no doubt both of these girls are pretty well-versed in her style, given how often Kim pays tribute to it. This is pretty classic mid-seventies, variety show Cher, right down to the spit curl. And she looks spectacular.

Kylie took things in a more interpretive direction – although Cher does have a history of brightly colored wigs. But this is all in line with that same ’70s high-glam version of Cher and like her sis, she looks pretty fabulous in it.
