Hey, remember when Margot Robbie was promoting I, Tonya in a succession of ’80s-inspired modern pieces in order to tie her look directly to the film without looking like she’d shown up wearing a costume? No? Well, trust us. It was a whole thing with her. We mention this now because she’s starring as sixties ingenue and Manson cult victim Sharon Tate in Tarantino’s film and guess how she’s dressed for the premiere? But also: brace yourself for the hard left turn this look took in order to avoid being too literal. We’re just saying. The hair, the makeup, the earrings, the dress, they’re all fabulous, but …
There’s unexpected pantsery happening here.
We … don’t hate it? It’s true that if you took the pants away she’d be standing there in a Sharon Tate costume, pretty much. She’s doing a lot of work to evoke her but she’s avoiding the sense that she’s in drag. She managed to thread that exact needle just as finely back when she was playing Tonya Harding. It’s a smart approach that makes good use of the blank-canvas quality of her looks.
