Keanu Reeves at the John Wick Los Angeles Premiere

Posted on October 24, 2014

Have we ever told you about how sorry we feel for Keanu every time we encounter him? He’s not our Number One on the list of people who probably never should have pursued fame (that’s reserved for Lindsay Lohan), but he’s somewhere on the list.

But first, let’s criticize him.

We sometimes scratch our heads at the “Wow, he never ages!” commentary because from where we’re sitting, it’s as obvious as the puffy eyes on his face that he’s had work done. Damn good (if slightly noticeable) work, but still. No 50-year-old man has a face that smooth and taut without some help. Not that we’re criticizing. But no one ever says “She never ages!” about Sandra Bullock or Julia Roberts because it’s generally understood that ladystars are expected to get a little chemical and surgical help to hold back time.

Anyway, this is an interesting suit, because it almost looks like suede, but that tends to also make it look quite heavy. We wish he’d gone with some color in the shirt/tie area. And of course, we are OFFENDED by his choice of footwear.

Okay, here’s why we sometimes feel sorry for him. He tends to get ridiculed a lot for being spacey and possibly even not that bright. We’re the last people to tell anyone not to make fun of celebrities, since we wrote an entire book doing just that, but he always struck us as a gentle, chill guy of indeterminate intelligence who never found himself in a scandal or having to apologize for losing his temper or saying something nasty. He’s never demonstrated the kind of chest-thumping braggadocio of other male action stars. Instead he tends to get philosophical and gently self-deprecating when he speaks. And for that he gets labeled as a moron, more or less. Sure, he can sound like an aging surfer dude at times, but sometimes he says something truly interesting. And besides, we’d rather watch an interview of Keanu being spacey than of, say Bruce Willis acting like his shit doesn’t stink.
