Jared Leto in Balmain at the 2014 Film Independent Spirit Awards

You’d think, if you’ve read our thoughts on guystyle for any length of time, that we’d hate this:

Instead, we love it – and we’re discovering a new-found respect for his style chops.

We’ll start with this: the “I’m having my period during a school trip” shirt tied around the waist is an affectation, and a particularly silly one at that, for the red carpet. That needs to go away immediately. But everything else looks really fabulous on him. And he’s doing that thing we always urge stars to do if they don’t want to dress conventionally for the RC or don’t want to be forced into wearing costumes on the RC: take your own style and ramp it up to red carpet levels. You wanna be a rock star AND pick up an Oscar? Then you get yourself a Balmain jacket to start yourself off and then simply pair it with good pieces that won’t fight it. Top it off with a rather silly (but still kinda fabulous) scarf and a killer pair of boots and you look put together, high end, and ready to receive your award. We wonder how much of this red carpet brilliance we’re seeing is him figuring out how to dress like a nominee or a savvy stylist figuring out how to scale up his natural style to the red carpet. Either way, it’s working. Can’t wait to see what he does tonight. If he ties a shirt around his waist we reserve the right to point and laugh.
