WERQ: Uzo Aduba at the 2014 Creative Arts Emmy Awards

Posted on August 18, 2014

We have some quibbles, but we’re going to go ahead and call this a WERQ, because it made us gasp and because she’s never looked so good.

Get it, girl.

The crisp, simple column of white is absolutely perfect for her looks and her shape, setting both off to maximum effect. She looks powerful, striking and sexy. Quibbles: not loving the lip color, find ourselves wishing for a bracelet or cocktail ring, think she could use a little support to go with that neckline.

But who cares (aside from us, and only a little)? She looks gorgeous and she won an Emmy. You WERQ that top-of-the-world moment, Miss Lady.

    • MilaXX

Agreed. Better jewelry and I’m good with this. CONGRATS

      • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

Coral or turquoise jewelry maybe? Also, since this post started out by mentioning quibbles, there seems to be some sort of a foundation garment issue mid-torso in some shots.

    • deelup

If she looks so amazing in that horrible lighting, she must’ve looked other worldly without it. And I even love the lip color. So tired of nude lips on everyone.

      • Sarah

I like the lippy, too. She looks marvelous!

        • demidaemon

          Agreed!

    • hughman

Now she’s an actress who I could see playing Nina Simone.

      • NinjaCate

SAY IT AGAIN. Whisper it into Zoe’s ear!

      • Crystal

        YASSS

      • Sarah Thomas

        Damn, beat me to it.

      • The Versatile Chef

        Indeed.

Well, there’s always room for a second Nina Simone biopic…

      • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

Now that you’ve said it, I can’t unsee it — in a good way. There is a strong resemblance, and she would kill it.

    • ChelseaNH

Plus she has that WERQ attitude going for her.

    • Janet B

      She looks gorgeous.

(Haven’t’ felt that way about anyone here lately.)

      • e jerry powell

Speaking of which, Lupita is M.I.A.

    • http://instagram.com/nevareese International Model

This is how you wear white.

    • sugarkane105

I’m a sucker for clean and simple, and I’m loving her whole head. WERQ that Emmy!

    • jenno1013

I love the unexpectedness of that neckline with it being sleeveless. That shawl kind of high-on-the-neck line usually goes with covered arms, and it’s particularly eye-catching without that.

    • KendraMR

I actually like her lip color, but dislike her hair; nevertheless, it’s a WERQ!

    • Glam Dixie

A good bra would have made me love this even more, she looks great.

    • TRSTL

That neckline and the suggestion of a collar work so well with her physique, LOVE this! Yes, perhaps a hint more support would have been nice but she radiates confidence here!!

    • Jacob Bowen

Love the white (without needing the black and white trend) and LOVE the statement earring!

    • Kate Andrews

Ooh, I do like the lip color. That dress is gorgeous, too.

    • Anna

A crisp, column of chic amidst a sea of (from what I’ve seen so far) fuckery. BRAVA.

      • Kent Roby

“Sea of Fuckery”: yet another great name for a band!

    • Sobaika

      YAAAAAAAS!

I really wish guest Emmys were broadcast in the main show. I bet she and Papa Pope gave good speech.

      • http://heartprintandstyle.com/ Vivi N

Same here! Well, least we get to see them take the stage when they ‘honor’ those who won “Guest Starring Role…”

      • MilaXX

I will be televised on August 24th in FXM and then shown in repeats.

        • http://heartprintandstyle.com/ Vivi N

Cool beans. Thanks for the heads up!

    • http://heartprintandstyle.com/ Vivi N

My fellow Igbo, Nigerian won herself a much deserved Emmy! Woop, woop!

      Okay. Back to fashion.

Jewelry was very much needed. Agreed about the lipstick, as well. But loving, absolutely loving, the pulled back ‘do. She looks fantastic in white.

    • SewingSiren

This is a perfect gown for a formal event in August.

    • Town

Off topic, she looks like Iyanla Vanzant. I don’t like the Condoleezza Rice Wet N Wild Lipcolor but the dress is nice.

      • DB Ruberto

Condoleezza Rice Wet N Wild Lipcolor
        I love you.

    • KT

She looks gorgeous!! If only she had a bra… still, definitely a personal best.

    • Kitten Mittons

Beautiful, confident, radiant! WERQ that simple sophistication, lovely lady. Topped off by a win, she’s making my whole day.

    • rumcg66

Can someone explain the Creative Arts Emmys to me? I thought they were for technical categories and such, but now I’m seeing actors being listed as having won awards. So what the hell is the difference from the real Emmys?

      • MilaXX

Not all technical. Just categories they don’t plan to make part of the Primetime show.

      • Chattygal

The number of Emmy categories has ballooned so much over the years that by necessity they’re shoving a lot of “mainstream” awards into the Creative umbrella since no one wants to watch a seven-hour Emmy program. (Creative alone ran three-and-a-half hours!)

        • demidaemon

Pretty much. The actual Emmys pretty much stick to the big ones, like the Best Actor/Actress and supporrting roles, which is already about eight awards.

    • smayper

Is it me or does literally every other woman in the background of these photos look godawful?

    • J.W.

      WOW!

    • James

Not in love with the dress because that weird collar keeps giving me the impression her neck is being pushed down. Also saggy girls.

    • papillon

I wish she had chosen a different lip colour but the dress is fab. Very striking.

    • natty_bat

Wish I could see her shoes, though maybe not as it might spoil The Awesome. She is rocking that collar and shape, the earrings are fab, and I love her eye makeup. That is a strong lash game, imho.

    • sojourneryouth

Since her dress is so elegant and fresh, she gets away with the dark lip color, but I do wish her hair had more volume. She looks amazing, but I love it when she wears her hair down.

      • MilaXX

I would love to see one of the looks Teyonnah Parris wears.

        • sojourneryouth

          Exactly!

    • http://fibonaccisequins.storenvy.com/ Danielle

      SLAYING EVERYONE.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

What is that bump, midline, under her breasts? I’m guessing something undergarment-related but it should have been camouflaged with some padding or something before sending her out for the photos. Gorgeous earrings, and I wish her a large cocktail type ring, or maybe a killer clutch. Nice job!

      • MilaXX

It could be her bra. You know those little bows they sometime put on them? I had that happen to me. Later saw the pictures and I went through my bra stash and cute every single one off.

        • Wink

Hilarious! I’m envisioning a Joan Crawford-style rampage… using an over-sized pair of scissors to snip undesirable bows from bras. No. More. Bows!

        • PaintingChef

I did the Exact. Same. Thing.

      • Nancer

I had the same question. For me, it really stands out on an otherwise beautiful look.

    • Sarah Thomas

Looks-wise, she would not be a terrible choice for the Nina Simone biopic.

      • Mr. J.

Love that idea…..Lordy, she looks amazing.

    • J-Ko

This look is giving me “Crazy Eyes”!!!!
      (In a good way)

    • http://tracismixedbag.com tracismixedbag

I agree a natural look on the lips and a large cocktail ring would be perfect. I love how great her shoulders and arms look in this. It’s a perfect cut for her.

    • Cheryl

Loving this, she looks stunning and I don’t have any quibbles with the lip colour.

    • understateddiva

luminous! I want a pretty pendant necklace with this, maybe something green? But it’s a minor quibble.

    • willworktomorrow

She so deserved that Emmy. What an amazing performance. I was rooting for Laverne but when i saw the last few episodes of the second season… wow. Uzo FTW!

    • carnush

      Stunning.

    • Latin Buddy

Awww her category wasn’t in the main televised broadcast?!

    • msdamselfly

I agree that she looks beautiful. I wish she had done something a little different with her hair.

    • marlie

I love this. I wish she had on bolder earrings or maybe a cuff bracelet, but she looks fabulous.

    • Jennette Swartout Leal

      She looks beautiful and elegant!

    • crash1212

      Stunning. Sometimes, simple is best.

    • kimmeister

I don’t mind the lip color, it’s the lip position (half sucking a straw) that’s bugging.

    • ashtangajunkie

YES! Goddess. And a well-deserved Emmy, to boot.

    • Lisalady161

Congratulations. You look stunning, my dear lady.

    • decormaven

Excellent! Love the look and doing the happy dance for her on the win.

    • serenab44

I happened to be there and she not only looked gorgeous, she gave the most wonderful acceptance speech; completely full of love and admiration for her mother and for her co stars also in the audience and the creators of the show. And she was in awe of Morgan Freeman who gave her the award. It was a great way to close the ceremony. The audience was in tears.

    • formerlyAnon

It’s a borderline WERQ for the reasons stated. But the average red carpet denizen would kill to loo this good.

    • spirit52

      Blah

    • ksb43

I am dying to see MARVEL cast a really great black actress in a Black Panther movie. Uzo would be SO GREAT!!

    • deech_sea

      She looks stunning.

    • Fred Vaughn

Lip color complements her skin tome SOME. I wholeheartedly agree that a thin necklace or something would help.

    • kerryev

I love the contrast of her sleekness and all the saddish Once Upon a Time-looking gowns in the background.

    • Mothra

      How about a smile?

    • Pterodactyl111

“I am here to collect my award.”

    • frannyprof

Am I the only one who loves looking at the civilians in the background of the RC pics, just to see what the “real” people look like at these events?

      • http://heartprintandstyle.com/ Vivi N

        Same.

    • smallgirlsaretrouble

Agree with the quibbles, but Miss Lady looks goooood

    • penguinmom

Like the earrings, love the neckline, still trying to figure out what that bump/dimple in the center of her midriff is. It’s diminishing my appreciation of the overall effect, because it’s so distracting.

    • MaggieMae

Yes to the quibbles, and yes this kind of dress and style suit her well. I don’t think she pull off the fru-fru dresses and looks well. Go for sleek, simple, and chic and POW. Get it.

    • Drunken Housewife

Great dress for her: very dignified and beautiful. She looks intelligent and powerful in a variety of ways.

    • demidaemon

      WOW!

    • crashtestbonnie

Absolutely gorgeous! And congrats on the Emmy!!

    • Ali2044

I love that lip colour! It reminds me off those glitter vinyl booths in old 50′s diners. In a good way.

    • Martha Anderson

I think the lip color is perfect. It is there but understated, in a good way.

do agree with wanting a pop of color on the end of the arms. Me I would want a wonderful Harry Winston ruby or emerald do-dad

    • NBG

This needs a bracelet to balance those rocking earrings but otherwise lovely. Real elegance is always a WERQ!

    • julnyes

She looks beautiful and she deserved that Emmy (wish it was shown on the main broadcast)

    • LibKat

Fabulous. I love that she went so minimalist and is letting the fit and proportion and THAT lip color do the werq for her.

    • FibonacciSequins

I can’t help but think of Dawnn Lewis every time I see Uzo. She looks gorgeous here. That neckline/shoulder treatment is super flattering on her figure.

    • Lilithcat

I’d probably like it if I weren’t so distracted by what appears to be an “outie” just under her bust.

    • amaranth16

She is channeling Viola Davis here. Werq, indeed.
