Kate Mara in Christian Dior at the 2014 Creative Arts Emmy Awards

Posted on August 18, 2014

This may sound like a strange thing to say, coming from two queens who seem to have spent most of the last eight years yelling at celebrities for being afraid of color, but we’re about ready for the current trend for yellow to end. Every once in a while, the fashion world manages to convince otherwise intelligent and level-headed people that they can make this color work with their skin tone and not make them look like a bumblebee or a nauseated chicken.

Girl, that is SO very not your color. In fact, we’re pretty sure it’s no one’s color, unless one is dressed as an overcooked egg for Halloween.

Also: it looks like an extreme close-up of a dress handmade by an 8-year-old for her Barbie out of paper towels and a scrap of felt.

It’s true and you know it.

It works a bit better on the model, because it seems like they tried to have it more fitted for Kate, which looks incredibly awkward.

But it’s still a pretty ugly dress.

I can’t think of a woman who wants to look over easy *rimshot*

    • evave2

I cannot imagine IMAGINE who would look good in this dress. It looks like the designer watched a bunch of OTHER designers videos and used EVERY SINGLE EMBELLISHMENT (the shoulders, the odd lengths, the slit, the down) at the same time. WHY IS THERE NO FRINGE, HUH, DIOR?

And the yellow makes HER look jaundiced.

Why are the Maras always on fashion lines? I guess because they are working actresses and their family is rich. BUT I never seem to like anything either one of them wear. I don’t care if it is fashion-forward, they just look odd in odd clothes.

      • judybrowni

Well, at least her hair is now almost one color, even if it’s an awfull, brassy color.

      • scoobysnacks

In the right light her lips don’t look like they resulted from being embalmed for once. Kudos? The Mara aesthetic isn’t mine, and I’ve just gotta make my peace with it, I guess.

    • saintebeuve

D’oh, I just said the same thing about fit… five hours after you. It’s just so… unfortunate.

  • Sophie

I guess it depends on the shade, not the colour? Two of my classmates today were wearing yellow, and one of them looked great in it. But yes, that is not her shade, and that dress just isn’t anyone’s.

    • kerryev

🙂 “Two of my classmates today were wearing yellow, and one of them looked great in it.” That’s a backhanded compliment worthy of our hosts.

  • Nikko Viquiera

It’s not so bad in that last picture but it’s terrible in the first few ones with that terrible lighting. What’s truly annoying her is the cut and design of the dress which make it look very cheap.

    • Which, as Dior couture, it is most assuredly not cheap.

  • Carolina E.

It’s like a grandma’s blanket covering the mess from a baby’s diaper. And the color…. The horror.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Ooooo….no. This is all terrible. Hard to know where to start! For one, she is too mousy to pull off this color, that dress or whatever it is, or that hair. What a mess.

  • Wow. The folks at Dior have lost their last marbles. In an effort to make something current, fresh and interesting they have overdesigned the bejeezus out of that,…thing. And it does Ms Mara no favors whatever.

    • Kent Roby

It makes me so sad that we are at a point where we routinely say “It’s Dior Couture, so OF COURSE it’s hideous”.

      • Indeed. How did the house go from being one synonymous with taste and elegance to this ferocious mess?

        • Esz

          Because they fired Galliano 🙁

          • Whatever one might think of him as a person, he is insanely talented. Stupid move in their part.

    • Kristi Mitchell

At least they didn’t try to stick this on J. Lawrence, right?

  • MarissaLG

Awful for all the reasons you said, but also- no earrings? Not even little black studs? You can’t wear earrings and we have to look at your ear holes?? No.

  • That looks like how I used to wrap quilts and blankets around me to make dresses when I was a kid!

  • estella_nyc

That white fabric reminds me of the texture of panty liners. Not a good association.

    • Jackie4g

      LOL. Thank you.

    • J.W.

    • Sanglots longs

I have a friend who won’t buy panty liners in yellow wrappers. I always thought that was irrational, but now I see her point.

    • Kathy

LOL. Panty liner for the 50 foot woman.

    • papillon

That’s all I can see, honestly.

    • kmk05

That or some sort of bizarre towel-quilt thing.

      • scoobysnacks

I used a brown version of that white quilty material to make a mole for Mole Day in chemistry class.

  • ballerinawithagun

The color doesn’t bother me as much as the chopped up design, quilted tank dress with terry cloth topper??? How could they destroy that lovely gold applique??? So many questions with all of the wrong answers.

    • decormaven

All of that busy-ness, without a single coherent design thought. Scrambled egg, indeed.

    • DuBey2

I like yellow MUCH more than purple, which also gets trotted out each year as a “New. Everybody wants.Color”. But this dress: no. And ESPECIALLY no that it is supposed to be ‘couture’.
      Shame on you, Raf Simons.

  • Ruby_Wednesday

It doesn’t help that it looks very crisp on the model but here it appears a little droopy and creased.

  • alyce1213

It’s yellow AND it’s hideous, jokey. For once, though, her hair color suits her and doesn’t look as over-bleached/fried as usual, so there’s that.
Some yellows — soft buttery ones — look better than the harsh yellows we’ve been seeing, but there isn’t a color on earth that would help this dress.

    • girliecue

I’m sorry, did you say jokey or yolkey? 😉

      • alyce1213

        Much better.

  • tallgirl1204

I’m thinking very pale redheads (a la Julianne Moore) might be able to wear pale yellow. But even then, not every shade. And this dress is not very nice, in any color.

  • Bebe

The shade of yellow is bad and only made worse by the color of the ugly old quilt underneath. Is that a very light pink or a trick of the light??

  • MoHub

The whole structure of this looks like a mistake.

  • NMMagpie

Terrible. Terrible choice, terrible design, terrible color.

  • smayper

    Quilted dresses = NO

  • spirit52

This dress would look wretched in ANY color. Good lord, can’t this girl afford a stylist? If the stylist is to blame for this fiasco…Fire them… NOW!

    • The pity is, I can see someone shrugging and saying, “Well, it’s Dior.”

      • demidaemon

This was me exactly, except replace “shrugging” with “eye-rolling.”

  • Aidan B

    This is Dior. I weep.

  • Martha Anderson

    I dont see papers towel

I see an old mattress pad. We use to use them to make saddle pads for horses.

yellow is a difficult color to photograph

    • MilaXX

I see two thrifted old blankets and some rick rack.

  • NBG

This dress is a baker’s dozen of bad decisions.

  • The lighting is horrid! Someone get a sunshade!

  • That’s just an ugly-ass dress. Nothing more, nothing less.

    • Kitten Mittons

Straight awful with a chaser of tacky. All elements are bad.

  • MilaXX

There is no color combination that would make this dress cute. The fact that it’s egg yolk yellow only compounds the fug.

  • Pennymac

Whats nauseating about it (other than the color) is that is appears to be made out of a bargain store mattress pad. Yeesh!

  • GillianHolroyd

I dunno. I think if the top layer had been made from a material with more body, and in *black* vs that searing yellow, and without the appliqué, then I think this would have worked.

  • crash1212

It’s a horrible dress from the jump. The color does not help. Photographing it in searing sunlight just adds to this disaster.

  • Anna

  • In_Stitches

This dress looks like it’s made out of felt remainders from JoAnne’s. The concept itself is problematic, but the choice of fabrics really sealed the deal on this fug frock.

    • ctopine

All I see is felt. Not exactly high fashion.

  • Kathy

    Human potholder.

  • ashtangajunkie

Maybe she’s just us up for a major ‘WOW’ moment at the Primetime Emmys? Because…yikes, otherwise.

  • Mothra

That is a wacky dress but I think her hair actually looks nice for once.

  • MissMariRose

Somebody at Dior needs to have their pain meds adjusted because it’s affecting the designs too much.

  • Felt craft project….

  • Jackie4g

    What a stupid looking dress.

  • Courtenay P

    wow that looks unbelievably cheap

  • That dress design was so, so ill advised.

  • Wink

In addition to being butt ugly, the dress looks ‘itchy.’

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

I HATEHATEHATE when people mix yellow with any shade of neutral or cream color.

  • Sarah

It IS true. SO DIY lookin’.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Remember when Dior made beautiful dresses?

    • Gatto Nero

      I could weep.

  • bingo

the yellow doesn’t bother me, but that baby blanket quilt material…ugh.

  • kfizz

AWFUL! Awful awful awful. Go home, Dior. You’re drunk.

  • SugarSnap108

It’s not just that it’s ugly, and includes an under-dress made of Quilted Northern. It actually looks cheap. A Dior that looks cheap.

  • RoseJB

    Lupita could work it.

  • 3boysful

Is it me, or is this gal always schlumping? That never helps any outfit.

  • connie238

Does anyone else think that Christian Dior and Coco Chanel are spinning wildly in their graves? This dress has too many things going on! It is ridiculous.

  • DuBey2

Hate the dress. Just boycott, Raf Simons, celebrities!!!

  • frannyprof

I think the first problem is that it’s Christian Dior. All other issues beyond that are secondary. Hate the hair and shoes.

  • sherrietee

you say paper towel, I say mattress pad.

    • holla

you say mattress pad, I say motel duvet PR project

  • elemspbee

terrible fit, she doesn’t know what to do with this dress. awful

  • gitchygitchymama

(in timmy gunn voice) Contestants take this mattress pad and yellow leisure suit and create a look…….ready GO…………. Make it work.

  • luluransom

What a sad and forlorn dress. How d’you even achieve that with bright yellow??

  • gingerella

I see all of her forays into edgy fashion as her attempt to compete with her sister, who could probably make this work (although why anyone would bother is beyond me). I really hope that someone finally persuades her to go to an event wearing something that makes her look enviably pretty and glamorous.

  • VioletFem

That material looks so thick, like it’s made out of pads.

  • PinkyK

Is she wearing a quilt under that “dress”!?!?!? In August!?!? So wrong. Actually, I’m not sure it would be ok in the dead of winter either….

  • kmk05

Everything here is terrible: the dress itself is for absolutely no one, the shoes seem like they belong in a different outfit, and she’s missing earrings.

The only thing I can think of, considering the dress, is that she should rightly be sizzling in the sun and smell of omelettes.

  • Imasewsure

Awful dress (Dior… what a surprise), awful color and she looks like a nine year old with that hair style. Shall we say, “epic fail?” I think so….

  • Grumpy Girl

I have to admit that I like the color yellow. I have a fair amount in my closet. I get compliments when I wear it (I’ll not question if it’s because I look like shit the rest of the time), BUT this dress, in this yellow, on her, looks horrid. The yellow on the black woman in the background of the top picture, looks good on her.

  • GoAwayKardash

    WOW that is ugly.

  • cocohall

The color is actually the least of this dress’s problems. Which is to say, if this dress were in red, blue, green or black, it would still be a Frankenstein dress with too many discordant design elements.

I do agree that yellow is not the easiest color to wear for many women, especially women who are pale. I look like I have jaundice in yellow. My approach is to put the colors that I can’t wear on the walls of my house or in ceramics that I use regularly. Ms. Mara’s dress here actually looks like it was made from a bedspread or tablecloth. Honey, no.

    • conniemd

My mother looked terrific in yellow. She was a dark skinned French Canadian. She was also very short – 4’11” and yellow seemed to make her look taller. I don’t have a single yellow thing in my closet, being a fair-haired English type (I take after my dad’s family).

But I love yellow. I painted my old kitchen bright yellow.

      • demidaemon

I am torn on yellow. I think it’s a fine, though particular color for clothes, but hate it on cars, houses, and walls while beautiful to look at in nature.

    • demidaemon

Truly, the yellow color is the cherry on top of the shit sundae here.

      • cocohall

That just sums it up nicely.

  • suzq

Dior must have gotten a deal on mattress cover fabric. I hope he passed the savings on to Kate’s stylist because there should be some upside to that dress.

  • VicksieDo

    Dior should be ashamed! AWFUL.

  • unbornfawn

This one is a nauseated chicken.

  • JauntyJohn

They didn’t let me have Barbies, so I made dresses for my troll dolls out of kleenex.
I think they might have looked better than this.
And, for the record, you can do a lot for a troll with a well executed kleenex gown.

  • KT

Ugh. This is awkward and unflattering, as per usual with her.

  • yethica

Seriously… can someone slap Raf Simons and take away his pattern-making kit? I mean… really.

  • tinyredlocks

Don’t blame the yellow. That dress would be ugly in any color.

  • Nancer

Not a fan of this dress. But I think the problem was further compounded when they took something that had a specific line and flow to it and tried to tailor it to fit her form. If you look at the model, you see that the shape of the front forms a somewhat graceful line from the armpit to the knee. That was what made the asymmetric cutout at the hip, with the white skirt underneath, interesting. And I think that is why this fabric was used; it IS a bit stiff, so can hold the shape that they were going for. Then you try to make it fit her torso, and anything interesting goes away and it looks pretty awful. Not to mention that the color is wildly unflattering on her… oops, I just mentioned it!

  • aurumgirl

Oh gods, that’s an ugly dress. It’s really designed to look like she accidentally tucked a part of it into her undies, too.

  • Yoshio

Sadly, I doubt this is the worst Dior we will see in the coming years. Just when you think this venerable house could not possibly be more tarnished and ill served by its designer, something like this turns up. The House of Dior is in dire need of redemption but I think someone is going to have to be sacrificed as penance first.

  • Joey Melliza

so that’s where my unfinished crafts project went…

  • jen

Geeze, that is horrible And her hair looks like she just got out of the shower. A big no all around.

  • Joanna B

That dress…yikes. It looks like someone peed on a mattress pad.

  • revlisacat

Even I didn’t make anything that bad in Home Ec. back in junior high…and I’m a crappy sewer!

  • saintebeuve

Huh. I have that same white material covering my mattress.

And good lord is the fit off. I generally like KM’s vaguely punky style but nipping this dress in so it was fitted (as opposed to the runway version, which hangs) was not a good call.

  • LeelaST

Beach towel, mattress pad & an origami pattern do not a chic look make. Not even in yellow. hahahahaha!

  • marlie

    Paper towels and felt. YUP.

  • understateddiva

Those shoes, tho. Choos? Anybody know?

  • Lisalady161

Ew….it’s like a fashion designer and a quilter took bad LSD together. That is just a crime against nature.

  • kim bunchalastnames

it’s a beautiful color, but (of course) you’re right. so hard to wear. still, even though i don’t like the dress, i find elements of it interesting. to, like, maybe, hang on a wall somewhere. just not at my house.

  • Michelle Gennari

Old yellow felt and a potholder insert.

  • ThaliaMenninger

“It looks like an extreme close-up of a dress handmade by an 8-year-old for her Barbie out of paper towels and a scrap of felt.”

    Truer words were never spoken.

  • Shawn EH

The latest in infirm long-term care wear? Everything looks like absorbent padding.

  • Diane Iafrate

I love Kate Mara but I dislike this dress. Boo.

  • Adrianna Grężak

I can appreciate that she always seems to go for the wacky dresses, but that just doesn’t look luxurious

  • bouionice

Awful. looks like a place mat and a matelasse bed coverlet.

  • Clash D

Oh for f**ks sake, Dior. Stop the ugly dresses.

  • Allison Harris

This is a quilted tea cozy with arm holes and you can’t convince me otherwise.

And yes, that color is terrible for her.

  • Carolyne

I feel bad that she could only afford a dress made of the quilted mattress pad from her bed and some dayglo yellow felt.

  • kategs

I like the taupe dress on the woman behind her much better!

  • kerryev

I have no problem with the yellow. I dislike the ugly, and to a lesser degree the smug.

  • ChiKat67

This reminds me of the dress Andi made in Pretty in Pink. You know, where she took a perfectly good 50’s style prom dress and turned it into a horror of lace turtleneck/deep v with satin things hanging off her shoulder column dress.

  • WaterGhost

Plain-looking woman with no discernable acting talent in an ugly dress. And yet, here I am, writing about her. Someone please explain to me how the world works.

  • Esz

What is this shit! WTF Dior? I know I keep saying it – but WTF DIOR??

  • GemFemme

It looks like the sad marriage of a faded yellow beach towel and Grandma’s white bedspread.
What a steaming pile. How could any sane person look at this dress and think it’s attractive?

  • DesertDweller79

Another failure by Dior. It’s sad, really.

  • demidaemon

Well, that happened. It’s hideous, but no big surprise. It’s a Dior.

  • Cindy Claussen

Looks like a PR unconventional challenge dress and the white is maxipads, yellow is vinyl tablecloth

  • ktr33

This is… this is … just a bunch of odd stuff done to some fabric and convincing someone to wear it as a dress. VERY Emperor’s New Clothes. “You will be the most fashionable woman on the carpet, Your Highness, and if anyone disagrees, it just shows his ignorance.”

  • SoAnnaPropriate

It’s a very practical dress if they run out of toilet paper in the ladies room.

  • crashtestbonnie

I’m sorry, but the color is the LEAST of this dress’s issues.

  • All I see is hipster banana. The white fabric is even vaguely banana-textured.

  • livesarah

Classic Dior ugliness. And Girl That Is Not Your Yellow.

  • JynxTheCat

Good heavens that is AWFUL. Who ever is compiling the worse dressed list put this one near the top.

  • MartyBellerMask

NAILED IT. Paper towels and felt were my impressions. And grandma’s old costume jewelry.
Girl, this is so bad, I gasped and OMG’d out loud.

  • FibonacciSequins

The color is far from the biggest problem with this dress.

  • DeniseSchipani

Holy shite, TLo. Before I finished reading your commentary and was looking at the closeup of the dress, I was thinking (SWEAR!): “I made that dress for my Barbie out of scraps of felt.” And I did, minus the embellishments. I had to work with my mom’s scrap bag,you see.

  • Jessica Rose

was this done as a failed project runway piece?

  • MissRiss65

Ah the couture use of polar fleece. *FAIL*

  • Dagney

the white part looks like an old school maxi pad from 1972.
