Heidi Klum in Sean Kelly at the 2014 Creative Arts Emmy Awards

Posted on August 18, 2014

Well, it looks like Heidi no longer cares about Project Runway spoilers.

So congrats to Sean Kelly, who apparently wins this week’s “Design a red carpet dress for Heidi” challenge!

This may not look like much but [SPOILER ALERT] it’s made out of car parts and pasta.

I think it is one of the most striking and beautiful dresses she has ever worn on the red carpet. I guess Sean got wise and figured fringe was the “thing” this season. He already did do the straw fringe and I see fringe in his previous work too, but is suspect Amanda will be furious.

    • GillianHolroyd

Will there be under-the-breath muttering about copying her ideas? I hope so.

      • SewingSiren

      • RR74

Is it copying if it is done better? …or perhaps Bob Mackie inspired them both.

    • EveEve

Michael Kors’s stuff has plenty of fringe right now. So I guess it’s having a moment. Personally, I think this looks hideous – As it does for so many other BKs, it reminds me of the car wash.

      • judybrowni

        Chicken Lady in Blue

        • StillGary

I thought the designers did an unconventional challenge using muppets.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Car wash, the shearing of a large blue muppet?

        • StillGary

      • livesarah

It looks like it belongs on Sesame Street. But it also looks a whole lot better than a lot of things Heidi wears. I don’t hate it, it’s quite flattering on her.

    • because, you know, amanda invented fringe…

  • GinAndPopcorn

But is the fringe hand cut?!

    • MilaXX

I heard her describe it as strings saying that why she kept twirling all night to show it off. *eyeroll*

  • MilaXX

    Yeah that happened.

  • Constant Reader

I weep for the muppets who gave their lives for this dress, but Heidi herself (hair, makeup) looks gorgeous and like she’s having fun.

  • Alexis Wenceslao

    She looks awesome, anyway. πŸ™‚

    • Constant Reader

Yeah, I kind of feel like I should hate it on principle, yet I don’t.

      • evave2

It looks like the kind of dress anybody would have fun twirling and twirling in.

Now I guess I have to tune in and watch him create it. And I only have to wonder who gets auf’d.

  • This looks like a criminal amount of fun, honestly.

  • That shade of blue is very good on her. I think this is a single-use-only dress though – that fringe will be all knotted and horrible by the end of the night.

    • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

      Like Heidi, herself.

    • homespunner

She has people (who will carefully untangle the horribleness all night long).

  • Alexis Wenceslao

She looks cute, but not famous enough designer for the Primetime Emmy’s. Good enough for the Schmemmy’s, though.

    • Frank_821

Yeah but this is the creative arts categories-basically what’s considered the second tier. ergo she can get away with wearing his design.

      regardless, good for Sean

    • Darren Nesbitt

I don’t think the fame of the designer should matter. One thing I like about Heidi is that she is one of the few celebs to walk major red carpets in designers who are not yet apart of the commercial luxury machine.

      • demidaemon

Exactly. Plus she was probably contractually obligated to wear it or something.

  • kmk05

Hair and makeup are stunning, and so is the blue colour. I could do without so many fringes, though.

  • Cindy Claussen

Did you all see how the wrong Sean Kelly on Twitter was being mentioned in most of the tweets?

  • Anna

Dust Wand is effective on desks, light fixtures, store fixtures, furniture, office equipment and so many other surfaces.

    • LadyVimes

I snorted wine all over my keyboard.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

    She’s a car wash!!

    • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

You can sit at my lunch table any day.

    • Kitten Mittons

SPOILER ALERT: Heidi has just announced that the winner of Project Runway, in addition to receiving a Lexus, will receive free car washes for one year.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

And as an extra special bonus, hot waxes, too!

        • Kitten Mittons

Also just announced, the sponsor for next season: Turtle Wax! Accessories wall will be cast offs from the latest TMNT movie.

          • bitchybitchybitchy

Designers, please use the accessories from the Turtle Wax/TMNT wall very thoughfully. After which time Tim willl ingest an entire pharmaceutical shelf and be rushed to the ER, where his stomach will be pumped and they will also reinfuse his soul.

      • demidaemon

Obviously, Sean and Amanda are starting a swiffer dress line. Look out for their infomercials coming soon!

        • Kitten Mittons

          Fashion CAN be functional.

      • Erica Woods Tucker

        dang. that’s messed up.

    • Fitzperry

Yup. The instant I saw it I thought “darn, forgot to get the car washed on the way to the office.”

    • Frank_821

too rich. But a designer told me one time that the term “car wash dress” is a legit euphemism in the biz for that style of garment

    • Thom

“It’s a car wash, ladies and gentlemen!” -Hedwig

  • Kim Elmore

Nothing’s more fun than a fringe dress!!! Great color! Want.

  • HobbitGirl

    It looks like a carwash.

    • This is true! And yet I’d still love a chance to wear it and spin my way down the red carpet, buffing all the other attendees.

      • UsedtobeEP

You are right. It does look fun. And if it is made of a stiff fabric, it won’t tangle. But, it’s entirely possible it didn’t win and Heidi just liked it and appropriated it for herself, so it may be a red herring.

        • Kitten Mittons

I thought of this! Maybe the real winner gets theirs worn to the Primetime Emmy’s…

          • MilaXX

As if there was any doubt Tim Gunn confirms this is indeed the winner on his facebook. “I know that people are upset about this week’s spoiler: @PR13SEANKELLY wins. We did it for Sean. The Emmy press opportunity was too big to say “tune in.” Be happy for Sean and relax everyone. XX”

          • Kitten Mittons

Well, there you go. I was picturing Heidi laughing maniacally at all our posts, knowing they were tricking us.

Now I’ll just picture some producer getting flogged by Heidi for effing up the schedule and airing the episode one week too late.

But really, a spoiler like this probably creates way more buzz for the show at this late stage in the game.

        • MilaXX

They seem to have deleted the tweet but on the Television Academy’s twitter account I specifically saw Heidi telling someone on the red carpet she was wearing the PR season 13 challenge winner design. I then saw Tim Gunn post Sean’s name on twitter.

          • Chattygal

She also specified to US that the challenge was a dress for the Creative Arts Emmys, so I’d assume what she wore was genuinely the winner.

          • Goldie

Heidi posted it to her Instagram first. Twice, lol.

      • AnneElliot

If anyone has dull sequins or lame, they could just stand next to Heidi for a little polish!

  • Wow someone was really asleep at the switch, or, they figured, the event happens before the show airs, so its going to get spoiled anyhow, so lets make it our spoiler. Nice dress.

    • Chattygal

I vote “doesn’t care.” The date for both Primetime and Creative Emmys are announced in January, so there’s no way someone wouldn’t have known. Just like, they know when Fashion Week is but make zero adjustments to the shooting, casting or airing schedule to ensure they’re not running into it with seven decoy collections.

  • OffToSeeHim

Haven’t seen ombre that pretty since Jay!

    • Kitten Mittons

The ombre effect kinda sells it for me. When all I saw were the twirling pictures, I was prepared to hate it. When she stood still and I could see the black at the bottom, I had to admit that it was striking. Not necessarily a new concept, but it’s done pretty well.

    • thimble

There is no real ombre to be found.. it goes from bright blue to black. Which when she twirls works fine, but on the pictures of her standing still I can’t help but wish there was a darker blue in between to create a real ombre effect..

  • MilaXX

On a positive note at least someone besides Sandhya and Amanda finally wins a challenge.

    • FrigidDiva

How sad is it that I can’t even picture which one he is?

      • demidaemon

The only reason I know who he is is because he is the cute blond one with the sexy new Zealand accent.

        • FrigidDiva

OH! Now I know which one he is, he’s the one that made the saucy wicked witch outfit for the Marie Claire challenge.

  • Violina23

I kinda like this, even though I feel like I shouldn’t. Love the color.

And on a pseudo random note, I had a dream last night I was hanging out with Heidi and I was telling her about TLo’s blog and “short, tight, and shiny”. In my dream I think I was afraid she’d be offended or something by the generalization πŸ™‚

    • UsedtobeEP

There is nothing wrong with liking something because it’s fun and a little silly. This appeals to the kid in me, totally. Must we all be so serious about fashion? It’s not like she paired it with Crocs, after all. (Then my kids would like it.)

ETA: And I think Heidi is obviously having fun with it, which makes it even more appealing. Twirl!

      • Violina23

Hahaha, no I totally agree! To clarify, I meant that usually fringe is TOTALLY not something I’d enjoy or appreciate. Because it’s fun and silly, and the color is great on her, makes me come around πŸ™‚

    • Kitten Mittons

When Heidi walked out in that blue snake print dress last episode, my first thought was “Short, tight, and slithery. That’ll do.”

  • SayWTH

Damn! How high of a heel is girlfriend wearing?? The color is fantastic, however the dress, and Ms. Klum, could have benefitted from some “sew in bra cups” or at the very least, some of those self-adhesive bra things to give a little lift.

  • But did she pair it with Aldo shoes?

    • Chattygal

Of course. She also enjoyed some bottomless fries in the limo ride to the Nokia Theatre.

      • Kent Roby

and promptly vomited them into an Aldo bag.

      • Kate Andrews

Bottomless fries sounds so dirty in connection with Heidi!

    • Violina23

Only if she wore them thoughtfully…

  • RussellH88

If I wore that dress I would be spinning and twirling until I either vomited or collapsed from exhaustion.

    • Bonnie Blue

I was going to say the same thing, if I wore a dress like it would be hard NOT to spin and spin to make the fringe flare out like that! Then I’d probably feel very dizzy. But standing still, the dress reminds me a bit of Cousin It.

    • Kent Roby

I posted a while back about how hard it is to wear fringe without working it. I personally LOVE long fringe dresses like this, though I recall plenty of BK’s not liking fringe (unless they just dislike the tacky fringe that Stella McCartney has been deploying, as do I).

      • Gatto Nero

        It’s all about context.

        • demidaemon

And execution. I much prefer this sort of fringe to Amanda’s and Stella’s fringe.

          • Gatto Nero

Right. Amanda’s and Stella’s looks tacked on (and in A’s case, pitifully homemade as well), and not really integrated.
Sean is using fringe as the actual textile — it provides all the texture, volume, and movement of the garment.

  • StarburstLady

No more than Lifetime as a whole cares about spoilers. I’ve had pretty much every episode so far this season spoiled by their website our facebook posts.

  • NMMagpie

Spoiler, schmoiler… what you really watch the “Heidi As Customer” challenge for is her getting in the designers faces in the workroom. It’s not about who wins.

  • Michelle Gennari

Apparently not. This was on Twitter yesterday and I was surprised they gave the designer’s name. I guess they just don’t give a hoot anymore. I mean not that it’s a huge deal but, oh well, whatever.

    • Michelle Gennari

And it’s kind of fugly. But anyway…

    • Kate Andrews

I’m glad he got credit now instead of when the show airs. And I think it’s a groovy dress, even though it brings to mind the car wash.

  • Sanglots longs

She does look good–it’s not easy to look that rested and happy in the harsh light of day. She really is genetically blessed.

  • Wink

Cut off the bottom half and this looks like Tina Turner’s ‘Proud Mary’ costume. “Rivah… toot, toot, toot… toot, toot, toot, toot!”

    • MoHub

Long version of the classic “go-go dancer in a cage” from the ’60s.

    • DuBey2

Yes. Nobody worked that fringe better than Tina!

  • Eric Stott

She looks like the scrubber in a car wash

  • alyce1213

It really does look like a Dust Wand, but the ombre is a good feature and she looks radiant. Overall, a grand look-at-me moment, so — mission accomplished!

  • DeTrop

Amanda must be very put out. πŸ˜‰

    • janierainie

      I hope so!

  • MoHub

Soβ€”we don’t have to watch the upcoming episode of PR?

    • Democracy Diva

That actually makes sense to me. I was thinking that someone involved in the show got the dates wrong for when the Heidi episode aired and when the Creative Arts Emmys took place, and was totally going to get fired for this accidental spoiler. It would definitely make sense, timing-wise, if she wears the winner to the Emmys, which are next week.

But I admit, I’m a little shocked she’d wear a PR designer’s dress to THAT BIG of an event. (Emmys proper, not Creative Arts Emmys.) The red carpet challenges are usually more along the lines of “this random-ass star will wear your dress to a movie premiere or extremely minor awards show that no one cares about” rather than “Heidi at the biggest TV-related red carpet event of the year.” But if she does wear a contestant’s dress, good for them! That’s more visibility than the winner of the entire competition will probably get!

    • MoHub

However, this is from an article in Us Weekly, quoting Heidi as saying:

“This is [by] one of our Project Runway designers,” Klum told
Us Weekly on the red carpet. “This episode will air this Thursday. We
gave the designers a challenge to make a Creative Arts Emmys dress for
me. They had 12 hours and a budget of $200. And this is what happened.”

She further described the dress as uncomfortable and said the little spaghetti straps were all that were keeping it up.

      • teddy partridge

Of course, the dress wasn’t designed with spaghetti straps, as can be seen on the program and TLo’s recap.

        • MoHub

Yep. Noticed that. Wonder whether it was Heidi or Sean who decided to change the straps.

  • Judy_J

Looks more like it was made of car wash parts, but hey, Heidi’s working it like the professional she is.

    • Kelly

It does look like a car wash brush! That was my first thought.

  • decormaven

The dress photographs well, even under that bright sunlight. It’s a good look for Heidi; well-played.

  • Liz

Do you mean to tell me that Heidi passed up a chance to wear AMANDA AMANDA OMG AMANDA AMANDA IS SO GREAT AMANDA on the red carpet and give her even MORE praise? Shit y’all her dress must have been AWFUL, I’m now inordinately excited for this episode.

Also, this is what fringe actually looks like. Take note.

  • ashtangajunkie

It looks pretty spectacular on the Klum. The colour is killer too.

  • jbj

She looks like an electric Portuguese Water Dog.

    • Darren Nesbitt

      I wish that was real.

  • Josefina Madariaga SuΓ‘rez

It’s… alright. But hey, she’s not showing her private parts and she gets to have fun with the fringe.

  • J.W.

All she needs as an accessory is a Hungarian Komondor dog…

  • Gatto Nero

Sean smartened up. He watched Heidi go gaga over Amanda’s fringed dresses and gave her exactly what she wanted.
    Good for him.

  • Winterlight

Oh my God, she’s wearing Grover as a pelt!

  • BlairBear

When in doubt fringe it out seems to be the wining strategy for project runway this year

  • kfizz

It’s actually kind of cool. That hair though…

  • Susan Collier

    Muppet fur FTW!

OK. Sean won. Good for him. I’m wondering if I need to watch this Thursday if this is the best of the bunch…

    • Goldie

Who says it’s the best? It’s just the one Heidi wanted to wear. πŸ˜‰

  • marlie

This… isn’t so bad. It actually looks sort of like a fun dress.

  • BlairBear

Also I hope Amanda goes into one of those I invented fringe and he copied me rants like past designers

  • KendraMR

How could they do that to Cookie Monster?!

  • frannyprof

No. Way. … I’m speechless… But, hey, she obviously likes fringe, so maybe we would have figured it out anyway.

  • Tuneful54

Color is great but it makes her boobs look droopy.

  • msdamselfly

  • Darren Nesbitt

I love this! I feel like if a Magician spins her around it changes colors and sheds into a new dress.

    • Does she become the Mockingjay?

      • Shawn EH

Putting out the flames is the hard part!

      • Darren Nesbitt

Right, or possibly the fringe burns away to expose the hanger dress she wore in the PR promo ad lol.

  • papillon

Well it’s not short, tight and shiny so that’s a plus. And the shade of blue is very pretty.

  • Paula Pertile

That looks like a lot of fun to wear. (Car parts . . . really?)

    • kimmeister

      (No, not really)

  • VioletF.

    Gorgeous color on her!

  • Little_Olive

Car wash, dust genie and everything, I still think it’s a great dress. maybe a different color would have reminded us less of cleaning supplies.

The makeup, otoh, I have no words for.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

So…is fringe going to be the next annoying trend?

    • Laylalola

I’m guessing we’ll see it on the streets as often as we saw Gretchen’s granny panties on real women.

  • JauntyJohn

If there was ever any doubt — and really, there never was — this broad is the pro of all pro’s.
It’s a gorgeous color on her, but the dress — the whole look — comes alive because of the way she’s working it.
Even when she’s in her standard issue short-tiny-look-at-my-tits ensemble(s) she is the epitome of ease on the RC.
You GO, Frau Klum. I hope the dress is half as much fun for you as you are making it look.

  • suzq

Several Project Runway weeks ago, a woman named Amanda cried out in agony, afraid to make more fringe for fear of being called “one note.” You can still here the echoes through the New York Fashion District.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Love the shade of blue on Heidi, and she obviously enjoyed wearing this dress.

  • ivfive

Heidi wears a Muppet to the Creative Emmys!

  • VicksieDo

Being able to do this in a day or two IS pretty spectacular. I thought it had to be Amanda’s when I first saw it, but it’s pretty funny that someone else did the fringe thing and won with it…hehe

    • PastryGoddess

That is NOT homemade fringe. Thank goodness

  • SophieCollier

Well, it does emphasize her height. I think it makes her look about 8 feet tall.

  • Miss wks

    Here comes Swiffer Sweeper…..

  • Inspector_Gidget

Maybe it’s an acknowledgement that most viewers don’t even care about the outcome of Project Runway any more. Really, when was the last time you were biting your nails over the finale?

Nice dress. Glad to see Sean quit circling the drain. And look for Pep Boys to sponsor the show next year!

  • CT14

    That top photo is awesome.

  • Chartreusite

I kinda love it for how over the top and dramatic it is; in terms of pure “going there”, it can’t be beat. I don’t think I’ve ever seen fringe that long and exuberant on a red carpet before.

The blue looks lovely and I agree with the consensus that it really accentuates her height, but I am not a fan of Sean’s aesthetic at all. I constantly feel like his approach is “I’m going to obscure the body’s natural silhouette” and the fringe is just another way of getting to that point (unless he was doing this as a cheeky response to all of Amanda’s wins, in which case I will worship him like he is a Greek god)

  • Tim Gunn tweteed this about 2 hours ago —> “I know that people are upset about this week’s spoiler: @PR13SEANKELLY wins. We did it for Sean. The Emmy press opportunity was too big to say “tune in.” Be happy for Sean and relax everyone. XX”

  • kim bunchalastnames

she looks like the cookie monster’s depressed sister.

  • Laylalola

Well good for Sean, I’m glad he lives to sew another day! All I can think is he saw the writing on the wall and figured he had nothing to lose by going all-out with the effin’ fringe that they are rewarding this season (because this looks almost nothing like what he’s produced so far).

  • ThaliaMenninger

So Sean picked up the “I made FRINGE. By HAND!” memo and ran with it. Good for him. It looks like a car wash, though.

  • onetwothree

Pretty, but it looks like the straps are digging into her shoulders. Painful.

    • MoHub

They are. She was not comfortable with the straps, but they were the only thing keeping the dress up.

  • Jay

Heidi wears this hairstyle a lot, and I don’t like it on her. Very fourth grade picture day.

Surprised she went for a dress that doesn’t have the potential to expose her good china.

    • Joe Schmoe

Probably because it’s become every day plates!

  • Clash D

I really like this color on her. The jewelry’s a bit matchy-matchy but she looks great.

  • e jerry powell

People were behaving as though they’d never seen a car wash dress. Drag queens have been working the fringe/bugle beads forever, no?

The Guardian was falling all over this even more than that monstrosity Cat Deeley was wearing. They’ve also apparently spoiled the entire PR season already, not just this week.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

She looks so good in this and the color is beautiful on her. I wonder if she can twirl around a room and simultaneously dust everything is sight.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

that looked absolutely perfect for a samba number-well done.

  • LadyVimes

I like it, but I can’t shake the image of those trembly alien things in The Muppets. Because that’s what it looks like.

  • Sherilyne Cox

    She’s a human pom-pom. Go Big Blue!

  • Parisinmydreams

Says a lot about Heidi’s taste in clothing that a cheap, likely hurried PR dress is more attractive than the expensive, tight, mini dresses she generally chooses for herself when money is no object.

Sorry about the spoiler though. The last reason for watching PR is now gone.

  • crashtestbonnie

Yeah, I saw something go by on FB this am from Tim re: the spoilers and his takes was, basically, the designer should get credit in real time. I honestly have no problem with that, although I’m likely in the minority; I read the TLo recaps before I get around to watching the eps, anyway, and I don’t get my pants in a twist over “spoilers” in general. I will admit to being a bit baffled by the dress so now I’m curious as to what the Kluminator had to wade through before making this particular choice. πŸ™‚

  • Kitten Mittons

Very pretty! And surely not as heavy.

  • yayito83

damn! the size of those heels!

  • Columbinia

So 1969, right down to the hair and makeup

  • JynxTheCat

    I love this!

  • MartyBellerMask

Those shoes are FEROSH. Sorry, channeling Siriano there.

  • FibonacciSequins

All right. It’s not like I won’t watch this week because I know the winner. Good publicity for Sean, who I like.

I’m going to pretend he designed this to show Amanda how to do fringe.

    • Obviously I Have No Taste

IKR?? I really like Amanda on her Season. She seems a bit “overly confident” this season and I “don’t get” her use of fringe. However, it’s a reality show and who knows – she may have been told to act the way she is.

  • Sam Smith

I think I might like this better if it didn’t have the dark bottom part, but overall I think this is a win. She looks fun, the color is lovely on her, she is covered up and she looks fantastic.

  • Coco Cornejo

Reminds me of a komondor jumping…only in blue.

    • Kimberlini

Yes, she’s too tall to be a Puli.

      • Coco Cornejo

  • lalahartma

  • Stubenville

    High-waisted hula skirt.

  • patticake1601

Please enter your code number then drive on thru to the touchless carwash.

    • ItAin’tMe

Omigod…dying! (This comment didn’t get enough love).

      • Brian M. Williams

Totally agree! My brother calls those kind of car wash’s Cousin IT’s……lol.

  • Swiftlytiltingplanet

I would twirl the whole time I was wearing it.

  • melanie maietti

I think this dress looks amazing, especially with Heidi wearing it. It looks fun too. I think it would be great as a short dress too with the same ombre’ effect.

  • Joe Schmoe

This is stunning. And so very Heidi. I think it’s every bit as beaufitul when she’s standing still.

I think she should have gone with Sayna’s dress and had her cut it lower in the back and front. It was gorgeous and wouldn’t have made her look like cousin IT (from the Adam’s family). However, Sean’s dress is pretty but she shouldn’t have took a spin in it because she does look like a car wash! πŸ™‚
