Emmys 2014: Claire Danes in Givenchy

Posted on August 26, 2014

As per usual, there was an overabundance of red gowns at the Emmys, which prompted the usual “We’re seeing a lot of red this year,” from the E! crowd. But it’s an observation akin to “We’re seeing a lot of dresses this year!” Red is to awards show red carpets as black is to funerals. To be honest, we’re always a little surprised when the more stylish, risk-taking types show up in a red gown, as if they just gave in and followed the crowd.

But this dress really stood out as one of the most interesting ones of the night.

If you’re going to show up the exact same color as the carpet (and about 3 dozen other attendees), then the very least you can do is pick something unique that stands out. Mission accomplished. Most of the other red dresses caused our eyes to glaze over, but we really stopped to take this one in. We’re not in love with every element, like the big necklace thing or the way the lace is deployed (or the fact that we’re looking at red lace at all), but we really appreciate the way this dress makes you stop and look. And the slight oddness of it really suits her well. Someone like, say, Julia Roberts would never be able to make this dress work for her.

Love the hair from the back; not so much from the front. What’s the Bitter Kitten consensus on that lip color? Of course red was the way to go; we’re just not convinced it should have been this red.

I hate this dress. Too Much Everything: red, lace, bejeweled belt, Christmas tree tinsel around her neck… it’s overwrought with details and looks garish and cheap to me as a result. She is someone who looks better to me in less fussy clothing.

    • KinoEye

Definitely yes to her looking better in less fussy clothing. She could WERQ a Calvin Klein sort of look.

      • smayper

Agree. I think that some of the outfits she wore in Homeland, though very generic, suited her in that they were severe and clean-lined. Her face and personality just don’t work with fussy.

    • mapmakerscolors

Agree. “Overwrought” is the perfect word. And it doesn’t help that some of them, like the lace and the side cutouts, aren’t exactly groundbreaking or interesting at this point.

ETA I do love the lipcolor on her but I’m not sure about it with this particular dress.

      • smayper

I keep seeing that back lace thing on teenagers wearing cheap awful clothes, so I’m instantly biased against it. Reply

    • gloriana232

Yeah … total nope for me too. It’s interesting, but interesting in that they slapped a belt and a tinsel wreath on top of a meh dress. The tinsel thing is silly enough already, but the belt is just … ODD? Why put it over the lace panels?

      • Kent Roby

The belt doesn’t really bother me in the front because of the way it lays over the design, but it looks really cheap and odd to me in the back over all that lace.

    • HeisenbergHattie

That Christmas ornament around her neck makes me very itchy.

  • dea

A deeper red on her lips would look much better, I don’t really like the dress but she’s making it work somehow.

  • Terri Terri

I just think the whole thing is ungainly looking. Not flattering. The sagging belt and the neck wreath and the lace and the P.E. shirt armholes. No sale!

    • makeityourself

Clare is quite long-waisted. I know this because I am as well and I recognize the fit issues she has in her costumes on Homeland. Anyway, my first thought when I saw this shot was why would you choose to accent this part of your body with a lace cutout and belt? It draws the eye directly to her stomach, away from her face. The proportions look wonky.

  • kim bunchalastnames

it’s exactly the same color as the dress worn by christina hendricks, but it totally works for claire danes.

  • Gatto Nero

It’s eye-catching for sure, but I don’t know whether it flatters her particularly. I like that it’s a bit eccentric.
The lip color is a tough call. The one she’s wearing is cooler than the dress, but she shouldn’t go more orange, either. Maybe a more neutral lip would work.
I love the runway version of the dress — very Artemis the huntress.

    • jen_vasm

I absolutely love the runway version. The neckline becomes less random with a bodice with more texture to it. It looks like a very chic dress ripped from a tree bark.
I think she tried to go with a lip color a slightly darker red to harmonize with the neckline, but with the background/carpet/photoflash, it didn’t really read that well.

  • lunchcoma

I despise it. I hate the lace, I hate the decorative elements that don’t go with each other, and I hate that It makes me think of Kim Kardashian. It made me look, but so did what Lena Dunham wore.

    • FrigidDiva

They were talking about this dress on Fashion Police last night and apparently this is Kim K’s wedding dress, just in red and with shorter sleeves. That alone makes it very hard for me to like this dress.

      • demidaemon

Oh, yuck. I may have to reevaulate it now with that knowledge. It definitely takes it down at least five notches.

  • cakewalkqueen

The waistline is horrendous and the front of the bodice looks incredibly stiff, even on the model. Then there’s the back… yikes! I do like the color and her hair though.

  • imspinningaround

I hate everything about this dress.

It’s Kim K’s wedding dress wrought in red lace.

    • Coleen

Someone else pointed it out, and now I can’t unsee that.

  • Janet B

I rarely like red lace, the runway color is better for this use of lace.
    I like the lipstick.

    • largishbearishAtlish

The little bit of red lace…then the turn shot…ooooh. and I LIKE the red wreath looking thing…so non-standard ‘I borrowed jewels from _____’ look, simple and…different in a sea of yawn-y red. I like the lip color. a nice bit of Zing. (you can see the lipstick blot from here)

  • JimMcC

I thought this was beautiful, then i scrolled to the runway photo and actually gasped. It’s lovely in red. PERFECTION in black. This is a rare moment when I would have preferred less color!

    • Bernd

I don’t think a fur bodice would have gone over so well. That’s what the model is wearing.

    • Imasewsure

Yes the black is stunning and I hate so many of the individual elements (in theory anyway)….

    • Sarah

I hate the red, but the brown/black is awesome. Maybe not for this, but for something – I really love it.

    • smayper

      me too!

    • demidaemon

I had the opposite reaction. I hated it in the black and love it in the red.

  • StillGary

I like a nice tomato-red lip color, but try fining one! I think it’s only available to Hollywood royalty.

    • poodle66

Oh no, sweetie, there are lots of tomato reds out there. I believe you can never have too many red lip colors so……Revlon has some fabulous ones – Love That Red, Fire and Ice to name two. Also, try Avon or Guerlain, perhaps Dior has one. I have one from Dior that’s very Dita Von Teese or retro Marilyn – can’t remember the name but I got the matching nail polish – 99, maybe.

  • onetwothree

The dress looks overworked — more than it did on the runway even, because of the bright color.

  • KayEmWhy

Actually the brown dress looks richer in tone to me and much more interesting.

    • Gatto Nero

      I prefer it, too.

      • BayTampaBay

        ME TOO!

    • smh4748

She’d be (rightly) excoriated for wearing a fur bodice in August, though it would vault her straight to gold in the Seasonal Confusion Olympics the ladystars have been playing this summer.

    • DinaSews

There is also less material on the runway model giving it a more tailored appearance. See the lack of gathering around the waist? The red dress send to have twice as much fabric.

      • KayEmWhy

        You’re right, that’s it.

  • Anna

    Holiday Barbie.

However what’s more alarming to me is that My So-Called Life is now 20 years old.

  • hughman

LOVE the dress on the runway where it looks kind of mystical and ethereal and woodland nymph-ish.

Then there’s the red one which yawn. And her lipstick looks like Krazy Karnival Klown.

    • Raspberry2012

Exactly – this is a case of where the color makes the dress.

  • alyce1213

Interesting dress, much better in brown. Red lace will always look cheap to me.

    • 3boysful

      Fredrick’s of hollywood

    • poodle66

But, but that’s what’s so fun about it. It gets tiring trying to have good taste all the time, sometimes I just like to bust out my inner trashy diva who works at Thee Dollhouse (strip club). I told this one snooty lady a my kid’s school that I worked there when she asked me, “and what do you do for a living?” It was all kinds of fun watching her mouth twitch as she absorbed this. 😀

      • demidaemon

        HA! You go!

  • KinoEye

Not a fan of the lipstick, either. Not sure what I’d sub it for though. Definitely a different shade of red. Also not in love with the hair color. She had a slightly darker color this time last year, and she never looked better to my eyes.

  • Sherilyne Cox

It looks like Claire is wearing a Pier One candle ring around her neck. And the belt is tragic.

    • I almost think that if you just replaced the belt with the candle ring – necklace thing, you’d have a better look. Oh, and lose the lace. I’d rather it just be skin-baring cutouts than red lace. I had a red lace tank top that I wore with oversized overalls and doc martens back in the 90’s. So yeah, it doesn’t really scream Emmys to me, ya know?

      • Sherilyne Cox

I still rock that look, Betsy. Except the Doc Martens. I tend to favor chucks.

        • Finish it off with a flannel tied around your waist, and I’d be right there with you. Ah, the 90’s. So much comfort!

  • bitchybitchybitchy

I really want that fire-engine red lip to go away forever.

    • poodle66

Nooooooo!!!! It can look fantastic on the right hair color or skin tone (Latinas). Perish the thought!

      • bitchybitchybitchy

It can look good with the right hair color and skin tone, but I’m seeing it worn by women on whom it looks either vampirish or clownish, so I’d like to see some other lipcolor options.

  • It’s Kimmy

i like the dress on the model, the black makes it look very dramatic.

  • Ugly, ugly dress. It’s total Project Runway with better seamtresses and more expensive fabric, but I’ll give points for Danes selling the check out of it.

  • understateddiva

I thought this was one of the best of the night – weird enough for fashion nerds like me, red to keep it conventional enough for the Emmy’s.

  • jilly_d

There’s a girl who can work a tomato red dress. Color aside, I fucking hate all of this.

Edited to add: upon further review, holy balls that model has long arms.

  • LeelaST

Love the necklace, dress and lip color. Hate the hair color (too orange) and the belt (unnecessary.)

  • tallgirl1204

Lose the belt, then take the necklace and make a belt out of it. Then I could say yes. She looks much happier than the model, and that really sells it, fo me. ETA: or maybe lose both of them? The belt REALLY bugs– maybe the dress would be better without one, or maybe there’s a seam that Must Be Covered.

  • Eva_baby

I don’t like it. It feels ticky-tacky. Also, Claire Danes isn’t exactly well endowed, but this makes her even more flat-board. It does her figure no favors. The dress on the model looks striking and rich, though.

  • SugarSnap108

I’m casting another vote for the brown on the model — though that bodice appears furry. Am I seeing things? Not sure about a furry chest for the red carpet.

  • smh4748

It’s not made out of olive-colored fur/tree moss, so for me, that’s a positive. Might be about the only one though.

Are those things around the neck supposed to be butterflys, or am I trying to see something that just isn’t there?

  • ailujailuj

WTF. I hated it. then saw the model’s gorgeous mink version. And now that red mess just makes me mad. what the hell.

  • Jacquelyn

From a distance the lipstick color is okay. But close up it’s too much.

  • kfizz

The dress I think is fine, I guess, but the version on the model is aMAzing! Absolutely wild. Way cooler than her red one.

And yes, a very slightly darker red lip would work better for both the dress and her complexion, I think.

    • largishbearishAtlish

oooh, now that you say that…ooooh, I LIKE that idea…a musky darker red….oooh.

  • deelup

This somehow looks heavy on her, even though the runway version with a fricking fur vest seems graceful. How did that happen?

  • Mothra

I had no idea the jewels at the neckline were also red.

  • Jacob Bowen

The runway dress was BEAUTIFUL, but this dress does not benefit from this red. And, the lip should darker!

  • suzq

The matching lipstick bothers me. I’m not that jazzed about the belt, either.

  • conniemd

I kinda double taked when I saw this dress. I have some issues with it, like the necklace and the belt, but it draws attention in that you give it a second and a third look. It was one of the more memorable dresses to me.

  • KendraMR

That is one ugly dress. Her hair looks like sh!t and that’s the wrong color of red lip color. Claire really disappointed me.

  • carrie

This is too many ideas for one dress. The neckline doesn’t make sense with the lace cutouts and belt. It’s a big huh? for me. But I like her head.

  • guyfromhoboken

You guys finally said what I always think about red dresses on the red carpet…they always seem to blend right into the carpet and you lose any sort of pop. Sort of like when a pale woman wears beige or link pink…blends right in and “Oh snap, where did she go?”

  • TheGrandSophy

I do like it, but like the runway version more.

  • alliekat9090

I LOVE that dress but I LOVE it more in the runway color.

  • higgledypiggledy

Yuck. Every single thing about this look is wrong. The neck detail belongs around a big candle at my mom’s house at Christmastime. The color is too sharp for her hair and skin. The front is boring. The belt is flat out weird. And the red stretch lace looks like cheap lingerie. In short, this dress is the fashion equivalent of the kid who sat in the back of the classroom in 7th grade, diligently eating his boogers. If there’s a redeeming virtue in there, I’m just too repelled to try to find it.

  • CKMia

I liked everything except the color, the material, the cut, the length, the lace, the pleats, the belt, the embellishments and the fit…

  • Qitkat

I think this dress is spectacular in the runway look. I wish she had worn that one. With the same hair and the bright pop of the red lip and earrings, she would have earned a Werq from me.

  • what not

Nope nope nope. Looks cheap. Much better in black. I like the lip, though.

  • CT14

The dress is much better in red than whatever slimepit green the model is wearing.

I’m going to vote IN on the lipstick.

Don’t really like the dress, though.

  • luludexter

I’m surprised the uncles liked this at all. To me its over designed. Have the jewelled neckline or the leather/lace, but both? Nah. Personally I like the neckline and hate the lace.

  • Pound of Salt

Other than the lips, her makeup looks much better than usual!

    • Little_Olive

The lips are too shiny. This dress called for opaque red lips, IMO.

  • frannyprof

I don’t love it, but at least it’s better than the black version.

  • redhead with tattoos

This looks great on her (and I cheered because COLOR; Claire Danes, whoever is telling you to wear neutrals is lying to you WEAR COLORS), but I find myself wishing she’d do styles that are either totally slinky or have a more well-defined waist. She’s very slim, but she’s long torso-ed (as am I) and how the dress sits so low on her hips makes her look oddly proportioned, almost stumpy. The cut-outs and the belt ALMOST get us there, but she needs the lower half of the skirt to widen out a bit more exuberantly from that point, I think, to look her absolute best.

  • lynnlee

That dress is awful. I think it works in the black version, but the red is just fugly.

  • The necklace kinda looks like red sequined baby sea turtles cavorting around her neck. Or, I’ve had enough wine.

  • halleygee

That thing around her neck looks like a wreath of dried peppers, it’s awful. Other than that I can’t say I like this dress.

  • AnneElliot

I hate it. I’ve never been a fan of blondes in red, and I particularly dislike this shade, too tomato-ey. I rather like the runway version, though, I could see Helena Bonham Carter in it. Or maybe Florence Welch.

  • Linderella

The belt and lace are what make it distinct, but in a bad way. Didn’t like this at all, one of my least favorites of the night.
I do like the lipstick, though!

  • Monzerrat Ontiveros

I love the kim kardashian wedding dress versión more than this

  • Lisalady161

Sorry Uncles. On a fair hair blue-eyed blonde, that matching scarlet lip is dead solid perfect, IMO.

  • evave2

Doesn’t the model look weird, like her arms are proportionally ‘WAY too long. They look much longer than Clare Danes’ arms. And she is made up so funerally. Cripes she looks awful.

I like the eccentricity of the necklace. I don’t like the red lace, wouldn’t it have been nice with a bare back?

  • anotherkate

Hair is terrible, lipcolor is wrong, posture is bad, dress is weird. I’m not feeling it, Claire. Sorry, try again next time. And put your shoulders back, at least when you’re giving your back to the camera.

  • B_C_J

The dress is simply ugly. The lace is cringe-inducing. the belt & the necklace are competing for attention & each distracts from the other. I hate gowns that exactly match the carpet. Why bother getting dressed. Just tack on some carpeting and saunter in.

  • FibonacciSequins

The dress feels droopy to me. I think Claire is too long-waisted for this one. The necklace is interesting but doesn’t go with the dress. Her makeup isn’t right either, including but not limited to her lip color.

  • livesarah

I should hate it, based on the different elements, but it’s working okay. It’s not bad taste, it looks to be well made ( unlike some designer garments) and it’s not boring, which is a pass in my book.

  • Kitten Mittons

I actually like the thing at the neck. I’d get rid of the lace if I could remove one element. Otherwise I like this for her.

  • JauntyJohn

Lips? That’s a camera ready red, imho, so it’s spot on for the event.
As for the dress… I can’t not see it as a holiday gown, complete with Christmas Wreath homage as a necklace.

  • antonialee

Not a fan of this look.

  • Call me Bee

    And–it’s perfectly hemmed!!!!

  • yayito83

Loved it! i would get this in every color if I could. I like this more than the wedding dress version

  • quiltrx

Just looking at the dress, I really dislike it. But looking at her IN the dress, I’m surprised to say it’s working. Good girl.

  • procrastinatrice

That red lace is making me murderous. So cheap looking.

  • MilaXX

I think it’s the necklace thingy. If that was removed the lip would work. George on Fashion Police called it a Xmas wreath and he’s right. It distracts from the dress. I wish she had gone all gothy and worn the black version.

I know it shouldn’t matter but this is Kim K’s wedding dress sans sleeves and that knowledge makes me like it a tiny bit less.

    • alyce1213

The idea of Kim K seeing it on a major awards show and seething amuses me.

      • demidaemon

        Myself as well. 🙂

  • Kelly

It’s such a major improvement over her last year’s disaster of an Emmy dress that I have to like it. Way too much lace, though.

  • Bozhi

    I love it in black.

  • alyce1213

Close? It’s the same (w/o sleeves). Kim is probably dying.

    • Little_Olive

Kim is probably dying? More like someone on Claire’s team is being fired… Kim must be ecstatic.

      • demidaemon

Unless Claire wore it better, which wouldn’t be a stretch.

  • decormaven

Rendered in red, the jeweled aspects of the gown outshine the dress, which makes it a design fail for me. The shape of the dress on her is pleasing, though. A more neutral lip would have been the way to go here. I do like the hairstyle!

  • BayTampaBay

This dress reminds me of a red sleeveless version of the wedding gown Kim Kardashian wore at her third weeding .

  • MarissaLG

LOVE the red earrings with this. It could just be the lighting in the pictures, but I think the lipstick is a little too purple. I’d go with something with a touch more orange, but I think it really does look great as is.

  • A Shiny O’Connor

Isn’t this the Karwestian wedding dress in red with no sleeves?

  • I am so distracted by her hair color I haven’t had time to assess the dress. Like is that sun-in she used to achieve that yellow color? Surely she can afford a professional dye job.

  • Joy Yeager

Too matchy: her dress to the carpet and her hair to the backdrop.

  • It’s too fussy for her, but I do like the lip color.

  • Miss Atomic

Something about this dress (or maybe it’s Claire) makes her shoulders look SUPER slumped.

  • formerlyAnon

One “interesting” element needed to be absent: big blingy necklace/collar, lace over cut outs, or belt. I’d vote for belt.

I’m not good with color so it means little when I say: I am not enthused about this color dress with either her hair or her lip color.

  • Raspberry2012

Oh, no no no. NO. If she had to do this dress, she shoulda stuck to the runway color. Yes, it’s black, but red just doesn’t work for this style.

  • LadyVimes

I love the hair, and I need to figure out how to get mine to do that. It makes the neckline less…crazed.

Also, doesn’t she look relaxed and happy here? Usually she struggles with the crazy eyes and painful smile.

  • ojosazules

    An awful dress.

  • Little_Olive

Head to toe awful. Yes, mission accomplished… this mess is hard to miss.

  • Bradio311

I’m shocked T & Lo liked this? Too many varying reds, too many disparate elements and LACE?!

  • papillon

The back is really what makes it interesting for me. Otherwise despite all the elements and the colour, it seems a bit bland. I like the lip colour but I wish they had done away with the big necklace thing. It’s just garish. I definitely get the Christmas vibe in the close up shot though.

  • gefeylich

I thought this was Mia Wasikowska at first, which I suppose is a compliment (isn’t Wasikowska about 10-15 years younger than Danes?) AND a slam, because this dress is as cracked out as what Wasikowska often wears. In other words, too much red, too much lace, weird ass sequined neck thing, funky useless belt. Not good.

  • Beto

The original gown color was way MORE interesting that this red one. Don’t like.

  • ktr33

More of a Cate Blanchett dress. But hate the lace back no matter who’s wearing it.

  • NBG

This shade of red does nothing but accentuate the wrongness of her hair color.

  • SoAnnaPropriate

All I can see on the front is a random cheap-looking belt. I don’t mind it so much on the model’s version, but in the off color red version, it’s an eye twitcher.

  • demidaemon

I like the lip actually and the hair. I even like the dress. Congrats, girl. You did good.

  • LibKat

Too many conflicting shades of red. The neck treatment hurts me in my soul. Such a good concept on the runway version and so bad here. The belt needs to go back to whatever cowgirl costume/square dancing dress she got it from. That red lip is great with her skin tone, but not with this dress. And for little Baby Jesus’s sake, tame those flyways.

  • “Most interesting” – if not actually attractive or successful dresses of the night. At least they shaved down the fur so it doesn’t look so much like she sacrificed Elmo.

  • Sara Brams-Miller

I like it better in black.

  • Tuneful54

ALL the colors from hair on down seem wrong for her. I do like the lace back but that’s about it. The model in the black version looks like she rose from the grave (shudder).

  • HeisenbergHattie

The way the back is cut makes Claire look hunched over, even though she is not.

  • Indigo54

Oh, So that’s what happened to my Christmas garland. Seriously, was there really any need to just throw that junque around her neck like that? Why won’t these people listen to me?!!!

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

It looks cheap, like a prom dress from Forever 21.

  • Clash D

I like the one from the runway – that color was beautiful and a departure from the tomato-ish reds everyone is wearing now.
