Melissa McCarthy at the “Tammy” LA Premiere

Posted on July 01, 2014

This is not bad at all. In fact, it’s pretty good, which is a relief, because we have not been in favor of her red carpet choices for this poledance.

It’s so nice to see her in a dress with a little shape to it, showing off a little skin. Both the skirt hem and the length of the sleeves are working great. Plus the shoes are killer – and she’s rocking the ankle straps. Also: everything from the neck up looks great. Her face is gorgeous.

But – and you knew there was one – leather is an unfortunate choice here; especially when it appears to be some sort of leather jumper over a sheer dress. The effect is very apron-y in a butcher/blacksmith kinda way. Heavy and light-reflecting. A shame, because shape-wise, this is working better than anything we’ve seen her wear in ages.

Not sure how to feel about her hair, but GOTDAMN those are some bitchin’ shoes.

      • shirab

I know how to feel about the hair: Cranky. It’s striped on the sides and the bangs and crown are a totally different color than the striped parts, like a schmatta almost. (Fake bangs? One weird wig?)

        • Glam Dixie

I also noticed the bangs were a different color than the rest of her hair and wondered if they were clip in but they look legit. I wish she could just take those puppies out.

          • MilaXX

I think the bangs are real and the rest is weaved in. Notice how dark the bangs are. It may be a half wig with her real bangs pulled out.

        • amanda siegelson

i definitely think its a bad wig – if you look at the part, that does not look au-natural…

        • marlie

I think it’s her real hair – including the bangs – with extensions added in for volume and the change in color. It’s a fail, though.

        • EveEve

Full on wig, and a one without a hand-tied part. And by the looks of the streaks, probably a synthetic. Some of her own hair near her hairline seems to have been pulled down to blend in from underneath with the fake bangs from the wig over it.
I like the dress, including the leather front. To me it reads more like a leather dress with sheer back and sleeves, and less like a sheer dress with a leather apron on the front.

        • Tina M.

From the way the bangs are sitting (or rather floating just above her forehead), I’d say either “obvious wig” or “terrible blowout and extensions.”

    • bessann28

Damn that has to be hot to wear in June!

      • L’Anne

Yeah, and it looks like an Xray apron is forcefully extruding her head.

    • Tracie Rivera

Good to see her in something different.

    • SAA

She looks great… love the shoes and her face looks gorgeous! I agree – some shape in the dress is nice to see on her, and keep in mind June evenings are pretty chilly here in LA :) August and September are the warmer months, so I don’t have much problem with a little leather, other than the fact that yes, the placement does have a bib-like effect.

    • GeoDiva

The reflection on the leather is unfortunate, otherwise she looks great! Love those shoes and the clutch is cute.

    • Wink

This is a move in the right direction. Baby steps.

      • Constant Reader

        My thoughts exactly.

    • Andrea Lentz

she looks amazing from head to toe. new stylist perhaps? Leather is a risky trends, glad she went for it!

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

I keep hoping this is a remake of Debbie Reynolds’ “Tammy”. Come on, cottonwoods, get-a whisperin’….

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I wish. This movie looks painful.

        • marlie

I wish she’d play something other than a twist on the same character over and over again. I know that’s WAY easier said than done, but she can do so much better.

          • Hetha Innis

I can only think of her as Suki in Gilmore Girls, which I was obsessed with.

    • Mothra

It looks kind of hot, as in temperature. But what a nice smokey eye! I am not loving that unfinished tulle hem, though.

    • Sarah

Oh, good. You addressed the blacksmith’s apron. I was not digging that. Her hair is looking hella wiggety, but I agree the shape of the dress and her shoes are both cute.

    • SewingSiren

The dress in almost any other fabric would be fine. But LEATHER in JULY. What is wrong with these people.

      • mjude

        thank you!

    • colleenjanel

Am I the only one who hates the hair? I like that she’s rockin the bangs, but it’s a heavy dark single tone on top, then those weird blonde streaks. None of the tones on the bottom 2/3 of her hair looks anything like the bangs and top. And her hair is wavy, but somehow cut very blunt. Wavy hair shouldn’t appear that blunt.

Looks like some cheap, poorly mis-matched extensions to me.

      • shirab

Just posted same sentiment in response to Danielle. You are not the only one!

      • jilly_d

I also think the hair is bad – it’s the color and the bangs. No bueno.

      • SugarSnap108

It’s too bad, because her hair had been looking great lately, IMO.

      • MilaXX

Agreed, some blonde highlights appears to be weaved in. I’m not liking it.

      • Dan_In_NYC

Yes, I came here to ask “Oh so we are just ignoring that hair?” It’s problematic for several reasons. And the seaming on the leather isn’t doing her any favors. But she’s got sass, and that makes up for a lot.

    • Kitten Mittons

I really love this on her. I’m liking everything but the bangs, about which I’m still undecided.

And I was prepared to hate the leather, really and truly.

    • PastryGoddess

      I love her shoe game

    • FibonacciSequins

‘Blacksmith’s apron’ was the first thing I thought of. I do like the shape on her and the shoes are sexxy. Not sure how I feel about what she did with her hair.

    • Glam Dixie

Girl loves herself a fierce shoe, wish the fabric was lighter and I don’t care for the bangs on her but the shape of the dress is really cute.

    • MightyMarshal

Hack off that shear crap, take the sleeve up to elbow and take the hem in so it’s more fitted and this would worlds better.

    • tonibaloney

      That wiglet is odd indeed.

    • AmeliaEve

Hooray! Everything I was hoping for in a fitted sleeve for her. The body conscious dress also makes a huge difference. I don’t love the leather, but I like that the look plays with textures to play up the monochrome. That lets the accessories pop more. I don’t love the ankle straps (there are already more horizontal lines here than I consider optimal) but the clutch looks interesting.

    • frannyprof

Love it. Now please grow out your bangs.

    • DesertDweller79

The shoes are fantastic! Love her makeup. Her eyes looks so pretty. I think the dress is okay, but… it’s 110 degrees outside right now here, and I am sweating just looking at that leather. Whew! Nice shape, though.

    • Dino Bonačić

      SA-SSY.

    • mmhmm

I want her to wear something other than black all the time. She deserves some color to go with her inherent cuteness.

    • SuzyQuzey

The dress is a great shape but would have been better rendered in some lighter fabric. The bangs are just hiddy.

    • alyce1213

The only good thing about this dress is the silhouette, which is an improvement over what she usually wears.
The patched-together leather “apron” is absolutely horrible, as are the sheer bits of trim.
I usually like her choice of shoes, but these look like some of the tackier and cheaper offerings at Payless or Fabco.
She looks much better without bangs — she just doesn’t have bangs hair or face.

    • AnaRoW

I like the dress on her. I’d like it better on her if it were winter. I don’t like the shoes with this dress. I’m not opposed to ankle straps per se but those are driving me crazy. Plus she’s already got a longer dress on and combined with the shoes, it makes her legs look toddler length.

      • MilaXX

I think it’s a half wig with her real bangs pulled through.

    • MilaXX

I like this look. I think George Kotsiopoulos styled her for this look. I wonder if she isn’t working with him more regularly. If so he seems to have a better eye for what works on her than previous stylist. Even her misses aren’t huge ones. My biggest quibble with this look is she doesn’t need 2 giant cocktail rings on the same hand.

It appears to be a dress Lane Bryant had for sale over the winter that has been altered for her. I’ll see if I can locate the link, but IIRC it was a sleeveless skater dress. The sleeves and the sheer bit have been added. The dress was only leather or PVC from the front.

    • KaileeM

I love that sheer strip of fabric on the hem. Flirty and slightly sexy. Also, that shade of blush is perfection.

    • Nancer

I don’t think this fits her well through the bust. It looks like it’s pulling across her chest. And leather in June/July – way too hot. I do agree that this is much nicer than what she’s been defaulting to, and am happy that she is wearing something with a bit of shape to it. A agree, though – color is her friend! She should wear more of it (says the woman with 6 black sheath dresses).

      • MilaXX

I feel ya. I’m a bit of a magpie when it comes to color, but I own 5 black skirts.

    • Judy_S

I don’t like the leather per se. but I like the way it is tailored to fit her torso. A less reflective fabric would have shown that off better.

    • http://heartprintandstyle.com/ Vivi N

Once again, stylish shoes. She sure knows how to pick ‘em.

    • Kbear

I know it’s the movie poster behind her head in the first shot – but all I saw was the “I dream of Jeannie” ponytail. My eyes are weird today.

    • Frank_821

Good lord why can’t someone put some color on this woman. the lady could seriously rock them jewel tones

      • alyce1213

She wore a burgundy wrap over black jumpsuit on Jon Stewart last week, the color looked great against her skin.

    • marlie

Get rid of the sheer parts of the skirt and the sleeves, and we’d have a total winner of a dress. I think it looks great on her, and I think the leather gives a sense of edginess to her look that I bet she’d like to show of more often. I hate the shoes, but that’s more of a personal preference.

Also, I think her makeup looks good, but I really hate the fake-looking light colored extensions in her hair. Otherwise, the style is good.

      • suzq

I’m not a fan of the sheer with the leather. Too much of a contrast and she doesn’t need that much busy-ness.

    • Shawn EH

The leather gives a kind of fun breast-plate, Grace Jones vibe, which I love. I’m more worried about the wig.

    • Violentcello

Too bad it’s almost literally a leather apron. Still, it looks better than the movie she’s pitching.

    • KendraMR

Not bad, but that wig gotta go.

    • TippiH

This is a great dress FOR JANUARY! I don’t get it….strappy white dresses all winter and long-sleeve black in summer. Maybe celebrities live in Opposite World?

    • xmixiex

      GIRL. LOVE it.

    • Gatto Nero

The shape of the dress is great. Fabric choice, not so much.
      But overall a vast improvement.

    • Caaro3

      Shoes. Want.

    • kimmeister

I like both of her rings, but wearing two huge cocktail rings on the same hand (and specifically, on adjacent fingers) is too much for me.

    • http://www.thekvlm.com thekvlm

Honestly love all of it. Because she is rockin’ the shit out of the whole thing and that shows, apron dress or not.

    • crash1212

Cute look, but the bangs have got to go.

    • bunnydiet

The best fit for leather is on a size “2” or a couch!

    • ShaoLinKitten

A leather dress in July? Is there such a thing as stankboob?

    • 3boysful

This is a better effort shape-wise and re length, but the pleather is giving me a Sweeney Todd vibe, and I despise the shoes. Fine makeup, but the hair? No.

    • KT

This is soooo much better than usual. Good for her. I didn’t mind the leather paneling that much until I read “apron-y in a butcher/blacksmith kinda way” and now it cannot be unseen.

    • siriuslover

I like that clutch a lot. I think the hem could go just a tad higher, actually, but it works here because of the layering. I was just reading a magazine article with her in it at the dentist (so no, I don’t remember it) and her style choices a couple of years ago had a bit more shape to them. I’m hoping with her new line, she brings that back.

    • understateddiva

werrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrq. leather in July is a little wtf, but it’s great to see her in something with some sass!

    • Nopinkertons

You guys, this week’s PEOPLE has an interview with her wherein she claims that “designing clothes is what [she] went to college for.” She goes on to strongly imply that she’s coming out with her own clothing line. The mind boggles.

      • Qdahling

I just read this today and was hoping one of the BK or the Uncles had seen it. I’m intrigued to see where that goes…

    • Skippymom1

Sorry, not getting it. I can’t get past the Hefty Bag I keep in my kitchen cabinet. Cute hair or not…why are you guys so enthralled with her? Who wears leather in June regardless of how well she thinks it’s styled? Did anyone ELSE go to the Tammy premiere?

    • Cynica

Anyone else hear “Ride of the Valkyries” when they look at this outfit?

    • Viviennne

C’mon Melissa, do the difficult work and drop the weight….you can do this…. you are an attractive woman!

    • Viviennne

The dress and shoes are abysmal.

    • quiltrx

The hair made me proclaim “fake-o chocolate”…allow me to digress.
When I was a kid, there was some now-forgotten-named product that you squirted in milk to make “chocolate milk”. No, this wasn’t Hersheys or anything like that, it was some bizarre brand that lasted maybe a year and was gone.
The thing was, it didn’t even make the milk taste right…it was a really artificial, chemical taste. So my Mom and I proclaimed it “Fake-O Chocolate.”
So, in honor of my late mother, seeing anything incredibly artificial makes me belt out our old saying.
Your hair is Fake-O Chocolate, Ms. McCarthy. And that is NOT a good thing.

    • Drunken Housewife

Whoever was in charge of that hair should be flogged. I hated the dress: if she’d just worn the leather part, it would have been awesome. If the opaque black fabric had instead been more of the see-through fabric, it’d have been okay. What it looks like is that she got a cool leather strapless dress which fit her perfectly and then she lost her nerve and grabbed a T-shirt to wear underneath it.

      Those shoes, though… I WANT.

    • demidaemon

I think something happened in the construction of the dress, because that leather looks really off. It’s a too bad in an admittedly much improved look for her.

    • Call me Bee

I like it. She’s been bringin’ it the last week or so….

    • carnush

Super cute look. Love the shoes. I might actually see this movie.

    • dress_up_doll

I’m glad I’m not the only one to notice the questionable hair issue.

    • Zeee

Having been a big girl myself, good and flattering clothes are hard to find, but you can always find good shoes and bags.

    • MaggieMae

      That’s a (surprisingly) cute dress!

    • enchanted216

      No. No. NO!

    • ThaliaMenninger

What exactly is exploding out of her head in the first picture?

    • http://www.readbarbara.com/ ReadBarbara

Cute dress, fab fab fab shoes. But what the hell happened to her hair? Wasn’t it much cuter, like a day ago? Did she get drugged and dragged into SuperCuts on the way over?

    • 909girl601world

I’m sorry, I think this is horrible. I have friends in this size range who could put together a fabulous look with 30 minutes and $100 worth of clothes from the mall. There’s no excuse for this to be the look her well payed stylist ended up choosing.

    • largishbearishAtlish

oh Damn, what a hoot!!!! you go woman!!! (the eyes are a tad heavy? no?)

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

HAIR MAKES ME SAD. And she looks hot – not hot hot, but sweaty leather dress hot. In June. Ugh.

    • Shannyn Marie

She looked in the mirror and loved what she saw. Nice to see her feeling pretty.

    • bringbackbeatles

I’m not feeling the hair. The bangs are one and then the sides are highlghted in this way too “stripey” way. None of the colors are blended together very well. The color of the bangs looks great on her though. Make up looks great too. I also like the shape of the dress, but i agree that the leather wasn’t the best choice with all that light reflecting off. It is reaplly nice to see her not covered from head to toe. I always like that sleeve length and this may be the first time I’ve seen her show any leg, which she should do more often. I am in the minority who doesn’t love the shoe though. I almost never like ankle straps with a skirt that length. They seem to make one look shorted when there is only a small amount of leg showing. Plus, I think there is too kuch goong on with them.

    • Swiftlytiltingplanet

I wouldn’t have a problem with the “butcher’s apron” (Ha!) if it weren’t for the reflective boobs. They’re distracting. As for the hair, the bangs are doing that because they’re used to having a part – mine will do that, but I don’t have a stylist and hair people!

Other than that, she looks fab! And OMG the shoes!

    • Michelle Gennari

I think she looks great – cute dress and great shoes! But what a way to start your post guys: “This is not bad at all.” Like you expected it to be. Wow, just wow.

      • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

Yeah, we expected it to be, because she’s got a pretty bad red carpet track record. Not sure why that inspired a “Wow, just wow.”

    • dschubba

I love the idea of this, I just wish the leather wasn’t confined to a front panel and the sleeves didn’t look so sweatshirty.
