Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett at the “Cheek to Cheek” Event

Posted on July 29, 2014

Credit where it’s due: She knows when to tone it down and she knows how to work a venue. For Lincoln Center, alongside a living legend, she decided to do a little Maria Callas drag.

Even better, she still somehow seem like she’s being true to herself. There’s just enough theatricality and weirdness to this look to make it Gaga-appropriate.

Tony Bennett is amazing. We wonder if they bonded over their love of bad wigs.

Not a wrinkle in sight. Brava! I feel like the head is a bit off. Maybe she needs a tiara?

    • I think most of our heads could be fixed by implementing a tiara.

    • zenobar

She needs a bolder lip. As well as a tiara!

    • Kent Roby

As I’ve said numerous times, “When in doubt, default to a jeweled turban”.

      • myandyleigh

I’m buyin’ what you’re sellin’ there. A bejeweled turban sounds like the right move. It’s wig adjacent without actually being one of those tacky wigs. It would look fab and glam. It would also take the look from Maria Callas to Liza Manelli, which wouldn’t be a bad thing.

      • smayper

        My thought exactly!!

      • greymain

        would have been FAB-U-LOUS !!!!!

      • Sophie

There was this white bejewelled hat/turban in one of the recent collections… (can’t remember which one)

    • Lucía Gavello

I like what the model is wearing, it’s giving me an Ellaria Sand vibe and I’m HERE FOR IT.

  • Latin Buddy

Looks like a Michael Costello original, namely, tacky cheap looking dress.

    • FrigidDiva

I was just going to comment that the fabric look really cheap…

    • MilaXX

Pretty sure it is. IIRC a Kim Kardashian wore the beige version recently.

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

      • Peeve

God, I love your screen name!

    • Mrs. Julien

But she’ll look aces later at Studio 54.

      • Kayceed

She’s already prepared with all that body glitter from the neckline down. Ugh.

    • Man Dala

I agree, the fabric looks so cheap you can see the “FLAMABLE” label from here.

    • Denise Alden

      BURN! 🙂

  • Carrie

Kinda odd seeing her in such clean make-up. I feel like I’m at a loss looking at this.

  • Paigealicious

    She looks high.

    • The Counselor

      Absolutely medicated.

  • Alex Palombo

She looks great and appropriate – but am I the only one that would’ve loved to see her wear the headpiece in the model photo?

    • MyFavoriteColorIsGlitter

You are totally not the only one.

    • Victor/Victoria drag?

  • prisma

Wow. I honestly did not recognize Gaga.

  • SewingSiren

Wait…Where is the cigarette holder, where is the martini? This drag screams for it.

  • Imma Mäder

I think her face looks slightly waxy, there might be too much shininess going on. otherwise, this is much better than her usual

  • runjuliet

It’s like James Brolin is sitting on his head.

Conversely, see Gaga’s real hair in a lovely elegant ‘do is quite refreshing!

    • Heather

Exactly. I kinda think this is the best I’ve ever seen her look. I mean, comparatively speaking.

  • FrigidDiva

I get a very strong Liza Minelli vibe from this

  • Yes, but let’s discuss the hot handler behind her in the first few pics. Getting a distinct James Bond vibe coming off him.

    • Anna

Indeed, there needs to be a hot handler movie: On Gaga’s Secret Service.

    • mjude

bitter kittens don’t miss a thing. I had to go back & find him. very nice indeed

      • When it comes to Gaga’s handlers, my eyes are trained to zero in. Hot Ginger Handler, Steroid Picard, now Dick Senormous here.

    • suzq

Then we can discuss John Boehner’s doppelganger crossing the street, astonished to be seeing someone who looks like Tony Bennett walking with someone who looks like Liz Taylor.

    • Le_Sigh

i am also digging his pink tie. Is it terrible that I want to order him to do a turn for us?

      • mjude

        not at all!!

    • Peeve

      Yowsa! Good eye!

    • smayper

Excellent point. Please Uncles, do a whole piece on the Hot Handlers. Sounds like a porn movie though.

  • MilaXX

It’s not bad. She looks appropriate. For a change there isn’t an air of desperation about her.

  • He looks slightly bored and or nervous being with her. I do love the dress.

  • Jennifer Bober

Wow! Man can the uncles call it. Maria Callas it is!!!

This is the best I’ve ever seen her look. Contrary to what some folks have said, that looks like a silk duchess satin which is a very rich fabric. It does have a touch of weird drama, but that makes it both Gaga and Met appropriate.

  • FibonacciSequins

I’m distracted by the bun being a very different color and texture from her hair. Otherwise this is very acceptable. She did right by Tony Bennett.

  • Capt. Renault

Easy, T-Lo. Easy. That’s my man Tony you’re talking about.

  • Joanna

It’s fine. Unoffensive. That’s all I can muster up.

  • Gatto Nero

She classed it up for Tony. Well done, Gaga.

  • Beto

First time in a long time I totally approve Gaga’s outfit. Time to go back to basics?

  • Scrangiebaby

I had the pleasure of attending. I counted 9 Gaga costume changes but, sadly, most looked like cheap curtains. And I. Can. Not. Even. with the bad afro wig and Cleopatra-by-way-of Vegas headdresses. But Lady brought it. Tony was as smooth as silk in his old school tux. And those voices. Still in awe.

    • sandrita

I was floored by her performance, she has serious jazz chops, who knew? I didn’t mind the cheesy Cleo look, but that bad ‘fro wig has got to go!

      • Scrangiebaby

Agree! I wish TLo could have seen all of the ensembles…!

      • Jacob Bowen

Her Jazz covers she did with Tony a few years ago were fantastic! She has the PERFECT lower belty voice for jazz, and I am DYING for her to release a jazz album so she can say “FUCK YOU ALL I’m the ACTUALLY talented pop singer!” (besides my girl Ariana Grande)

        • sandrita

The concert was taped for PBS’ Great Performances series. When iairs in October I’m sure she will gain a whole new audience.

          • Jacob Bowen

Oh my GOSH! Yes! I didn’t know that was happening!
Last year’s Lady Gaga/Muppet Thanksgiving (which I myself didn’t love) is STILL on my DVR because my mom is OBSESSED with it. She and my dad watched it weekly during the holidays, and I see her watching it even now when she’s cleaning the house.

  • Aidan B

Kind of wish she’d worn the headpiece that the model is sporting; that’s fabulous. She looks good, though!

  • Glam Dixie

That man will seriously duet with ANYONE, no dig to her specifically, just in general. I don’t know, it’s tame and somewhat tasteful, but I don’t really like it, the severe hair doesn’t really suit her I think and the dress is boring and cheap looking.

  • @Biting Panda

    Nicely done.

  • mjude

I love tony, the man is in his 80’s & can still sing. I look forward to the album. they were cute on the today show.

  • snarkalicious

Toned down, yes – but she just couldn’t resist putting glitter glue in her cleavage, could she?

  • shopgirl716

Dude standing behind them in the first pic? Hot, way hot.

    • Wink

      Looks kinda like Jon Hamm.

  • d4divine

I can see her planning her look…Let’s see…Lincoln Center, well of course…I’ll be Maria Callas. Cue opera record. Lol

  • Denise Rambo

Let’s just call it what it is … a CAFTAN!

  • jilly_d

I love this look for her. I had the pleasure of hearing Tony two years ago, and I’m happy to report he sounds as good as he ever did. He is truly amazing.

  • Wink

When I saw her, I thought “1970s Cher.” But Maria Callas is MUCH better!

  • marlie

I think Gaga looks great (though maybe not skin-colored lipstick?). THIS is the “Fashion Gaga” that’s so fun to watch.

  • hughman

My first thought with her was Liz Taylor.

But I can. not. get. over his wig. It’s like a little hair omelet just placed so on his head.

    • smayper

That gave me a huge guffaw, thanks!

      • Coolekat

He probably thinks it looks good and that’s all that matters, anyway.

        • Shawn EH

I dare anyone to tell him othewise.

  • suzq

Thank you for leaving the talons at home, Lady Gaga. But most of all…thank you for being a friend. Traveled down the road and back again. Bringing that Golden Girls realness to a night out with Antonio Benedetto.

    • formerlyAnon

      Damn straight.

  • nannypoo

    She looks beautiful here.

  • lilibetp

Looks kind of autumnal, especially compared to the shorts-wearing people in the background. Incidentally, Jazz at Lincoln Center is actually at Columbus Circle, which I find incredibly confusing. They’re on the corner of Broadway and 60th Street, several blocks down from where the Met and Avery Fisher Hall are.

  • artgirl9

Looks like a cheap choir gown

  • e jerry powell

I love the detail. I think I just fell out.

  • kimmeister

Tony’s face looks wonderful though. It’s nice to see someone age gracefully.

  • Thomas

Her voice has always been much better suited for Jazz or Broadway than it has pop. Good move on her part. Pertaining to how she looks, I like everything except for her head, specifically the hair.

    • Gatto Nero

She’s got great jazz phrasing, something that most pop singers can’t comprehend, let alone accomplish.

  • alyce1213

Respectable and respectful, in a massive, shiny black caftan way. I’m glad she didn’t embarrass him.

  • Clydette Wantland

    She looks so…so….normal! Happy dance!!

    • Shawn EH

      She looks Italian, like Fellini-esque!

  • rainwood1

Ooooh, I get to tell one of my favorite stories. I had just finished up at a conference in San Francisco and needed to get to the airport to go home. It was rush hour on Friday afternoon in the pouring rain. The doorman from the hotel and I were on the sidewalk under an umbrella as he tried in vain to flag down a taxi. A man walks in front of us and the doorman and I turned to each other in recognition and shock. Yes, it was Tony Bennett. In San Francisco. And wearing a really terrible rug. Ah, the good old days. I still love that story.

    • Coolekat

Tony’s hair is age appropriate. Remember that he comes from a time when bald or shaved wasn’t in or even acceptable. Capt. Picard was a rare exception.

      • Shawn EH

And apparently it was very hard for even Patrick Stewart to embrace, though thank goodness he did!

      • rainwood1

The thing I don’t get is that there are times when he has a really great toupee, wig, whatever and it looks a lot more natural. This is not one of those unfortunately.

  • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

I want to ask this question in a respectful manner, because I’m genuinely curious. (I suppose it’s a bad idea to even ask the question if I have to preface it this way, but I hope that by now most of you know me and know when I’m being sincere.)

Sometimes, within the span of a day or two, Gaga appears to gain and lose a tremendous amount of weight. Is it just my imagination? Is it because sometimes she wears enormous hats/wigs/dresses and then the next day she wears two pasties and a mini pad and so I have no real concept of what her actual shape looks like? Mostly, I’d like to know because I think there is some serious trompe l’oeil magic going on here, and I, myself, would like to trompe some oeils if possible.

    • Coolekat

Two pasties and a mini pad – that is hysterical.

    • Thomas

Supposedly she’s dealt with eating disorders and has struggled with her weight for years. Plus, those photos of her going around last year where she looked like she was fat were totally photoshopped. Maybe she wears padding like a drag queen though, idk. That’s the best answer I can give.

      • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

        Drag queens wear padding?!?! 😉

        • Thomas

          • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

What are you going to spoil for me next? What? Like…Darth Vader is really LUKE’S father? Rosebud is a wagon? No! A sled? Dinosaurs DIDN’T roam the earth 4000 years ago?

          • Thomas

            Haha You’re too funny.

  • Constant Reader

I have minor quibbles, but this is Gaga. Surprisingly, she’s not killing herself to upstage a living legend and she’s not wearing giant hoof boots. She looks pretty and appropriate, and yet just unusual enough that it’s in her wheelhouse. I call it a win.

  • ChristyDee1

T & L are full of zingers today. Wow! (Notably Gwyneth, Jessica and Tony’s wig.)

  • Shawn EH

I love their relationship. He’s managing to bring out the best in her again, because of her respect for him. And their shared talent as vocalists, which is considerable. He got along well with Amy Winehouse too IIRC; suave man.

    • formerlyAnon

For some reason, he’s been able to establish mutual rapport with other singers much younger than he is. I don’t know if it’s his demeanor and interest in them (either because of their talent or work ethic because they’re pretty younger women or both), or because they respect him and his work, or all of the above plus more.

  • crash1212

Loved their duet together. When I saw the headline, I was so afraid she was going to embarrass herself alongside the legend that is Tony Bennett. Glad to see she knows how to “act right” (as my mother used to say) when need be. Her frock is so much better in black than the non-color on the model.

  • evave2

I would like to know (and I don’t know) if THIS is her real hair color and the rest of the time we see her in blond wigs OR if THIS is a dye job, dye removal job or whatever and the blonde was never ever what she really looks like. I think she looks great at a brunette, her facial coloring matches it.

The dress is lovelier to me in the pale pink, but it looks ok in the black.

And no wacky shoe was seen (her and the McQueen HOOVES are matched in my eyes forever).

    • demidaemon

I think the pale pink is nice, but it would probably look horrible on Gaga and her very pale skin. The color alteration was a smart one on her part.

    • CatLady

She is a natural brunette though I don’t know if this shade was enhanced in any way.

  • formerlyAnon

Thank god she can pull out something appropriate (and yet, her) for Tony Bennett. I admired the duets they did several years ago a great deal – I thought it showed that she can be a good singer without gimmicks if she chooses.

I hope he’s still got enough marbles left to give her some straight shooting advice about putting more into her craft than her wearable craft projects, and that she’s got enough marbles to listen.

  • GemFemme

She looks a little too Norma Desmond for me, but overall a huge step up from the crap looks we’ve seen her in lately.

  • largishbearishAtlish

Great…now I can un-see the bad toupe… and the dress does look like a cheap beauty parlor smock. He is a legend for gods sake… but it IS Gaga and its ‘her’ and it works, just wish the dress didn’t look so dang cheap.

  • SistaT

She looks like a wax figure.

  • demidaemon

I did not even recognize her. I’m going to say that is a good thing. She looks pretty good here.

  • Paula Pertile

I got to hear him sing “I left my heart”, in San Francisco. For reals.
Oh, her. Yes, more of this please.

  • Columbinia

My take on Lady Gaga was 1960s Liz Taylor revival.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

Compared to her usual looks, this is quite lovely while still dramatic. I think she stood in front of the body glitter spray gun a little too long.

  • Channeling Arlene Dahl, circa 1960, in an appropriately somber “hostess still in mourning gown” gown!

    • formerlyAnon

You hit the nail on the head, I think!

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Refreshing to see Gaga pull off a toned down, but stil diva-ish look, in tribute to Mr. Bennett.

  • Trickytrisha

Hmm, to me she looks like a 40ish Italian matron who hasn’t quite let her latest facelift “gel” enough.

    • formerlyAnon

A persona Mr. Bennett is no doubt quite comfortable with.

  • Holy fuck, I actually didn’t recognize her. MORE LIKE THIS, GAGA. (But not too much. Man, the overexposure HURT.)

  • cocohall

Bennett is known for not suffering fools, in terms of musical preparation. He expects professionalism and it is to Gaga’s credit that she can deliver. He has admitted having drug/alcohol issues when he was younger and you don’t get to be a living legend in the entertainment business without seeing a lot. I suspect Gaga is NOT the most eccentric person he has crossed paths with. As for the wig, he normally has “hair” with a very coarse, almost brillo pad like texture. I’ve not seen this blown out version before. But hey, I am of the opinion that once you hit 80, you get a free pass.

  • siriuslover

Not only did she tone it down a bit, she’s also being a perfect “date” for Mr. Bennett. They look cute together — and not in an “I want to set them up kind of way,” more like a they are having fun and seem to respect each other kind of way. Is that her natural hair color?

  • GorgeousThings

She’s been tweeting the shit out of this event for the last few days. Good to see her looking Gaga-normal, but does it feel to anyone else somewhat, um, contrived, or worse, desperate?

  • Helen

I love you guys but, please, dissing Tony Bennett with a back-handed comment about wigs…? Come on, you’re better than that. Really guys? Yours is the one blog that had never disappointed me until now 🙁

  • Ann VerWiebe

Is she wearing painter’s stilts? We all know Steffie is a good 8″ shorter than this.

  • RescueMe23

Cheap dress with a wax version of Gaga.

  • Uncle Spike

Wow. That’s the best I’ve ever seen her. Full stop. Sometimes I wonder what would happen if she came down from her perch on cloudcuckooland and dressed a bit more conventionally, to the point where we humanoids could relate to her. For the first time, I see it…and I really like it. I’d be happy to see more of it.

  • “Tony Bennett is amazing. We wonder if they bonded over their love of bad wigs.” – That was artfully done, Sirs.

  • PinkyK

I’m a sucker for Tony Bennett and a chic caftan. Good show you two!

  • Boobs Radley

Tony Bennett is a national goddamn treasure. He could wear a dead rat on his head and still be the coolest guy in a 250-mile radius.

  • Jeff Warhurst

    THIS is a fashionista.

  • snarkykitten

    She’s wearing a bedazzled nightgown. Puh-lease

  • queeniethebold

i am (still) sick of her and find her off-putting no matter what she’s doing. i’d be ever so much more amenable to her were she to just go away for a while. Bah. Leave my Tony Bennett alone. As for what she’s wearing, meh. And that head bun thing is just stupid.

    • alliekat9090

Everything you said. Just tired of her schtick. Just weary of looking at her and her desperation .

  • Howardcruikshank

She’s a no talent dog that needs nothing more than her head stomped. And he’s a has been. Next.
