Elle Fanning in Christopher Kane at the Comic-Con 2014: “The Boxtrolls” Panel

Posted on July 28, 2014

We are ever so thrilled that the formerly ghost-like Elle has learned to embrace color. Now we need to work on teaching her which colors she’s supposed to be embracing.

We’re not entirely in love with the salmon-y orange-pink of the dress against her skin, but we do love the multicolored flowers at the neckline, as well as the colorful pops of jewelry and the super-fun nails. And sure, the eye color’s crazy, but she’s young and it’s Comic-Con. We can’t hate on it.

It’s really the footwear that has us cringing. For one, the pointy-toed pump is too serious and mature-looking for her and for this dress. For another, there’s the not-quite-matchy color, which is giving us both splitting tension headaches. A less pointy pump picking up one of the other colors of the dress would’ve made us much happier. And we just know Elle lives for making the two of us happy.

But it’s a cute look all around, despite our nitpicking.

I like this more than I expected. I really like how graphic the dress is and how the salmon and the black contrast. It almost looks like someone drew a cartoon dress on her (if you avoid the close ups)

      • Fitzperry

“Cartoon dress” – that’s a great description of it!

      • lundibleu

I find Christopher Kane to be hit or miss in a crazy way. The hits, for me, are usually complete and utter WOW pieces, while the misses are a massive WTF were you thinking Christopher type thing.

    • frannyprof

I think she looks sweet! And I’m dying to see “The Boxtrolls.” I love that she picked up on the movie’s shabby-chic aesthetic with the color, lace, and flowers.

    • nannypoo

I love this. The yellow eyeliner is scary, but it’s appropriate for the venue. I even sort of like the color of the dress on her, but the shoes represent a missed opportunity.

      • Lisalady161

Yep. I winced when I saw the eyeliner, but she’s young and it’s SDCC.

      • Snailstsichr

I can’t hate on the eyeliner since I did the same thing at her age. We won’t mention how many decades ago that was.

      • gabbilevy

It’s not only venue-appropriate, it’s imitating the SDCC logo. Can’t hate on that.

    • moppet

Yiiikes that eyeliner. Totally agree that she’s young and it’s completely venue-appropriate…it’s still a record-scratch for me, but I’m very, very old.

I think she’s so cute. I love the way her smile actually reaches her eyes.

      • PinkyAndNoBrain

Ehhhhhh . . . I’m not out of college yet and that eyeliner hurts. It’s just . . . why does it go around the eye like that? And if you’re going to put it under halfway, why not go the whole hog? It’s like a yellow raccoon but she got distracted halfway through. I guess I’m saying that I wish she’d committed to the crazy. That way it’d seem more intentional and less “I let my five-year-old draw this.”

        Is that too bitchy?

        • demidaemon

          No. Not at all. :)

          • PinkyAndNoBrain

Thank goodness! It wasn’t going to change anything, but I’d sure feel guilty about it . . .

    • j_am

I love the eye makeup. Have fun, kiddo!

    • Nancer

This just makes me grin. Look! She’s young and vibrant! How great is that?

    • Glam Dixie

Too much sternum on display, the makeup is terrifying but somehow youthful and fun at the same time, but yeah that is not the best color for her skin tone.

    • sienna elm

Love the dress – but she should stick to using the highlighter in her schoolwork and not on her eyelids.

    • Sam Smith

Love the eye makeup, perfect for the venue. Really digging the look from the chest up.

    • FrigidDiva

If they were going to go with a crazy color for the eyeliner I think purple or blue would have gone much better with her skin tone and not that horrid yellow. Also, I think if that crotchet part was either the same purple or blue that’s in some of the flowers along the neckline it would compliment her skin tone so much better than that orange. Agree about the shoes, ship those off to someone else.

    • Grumpy Girl

As another mother pointed out: it’s the depth of the neckline that is too much, vs. the colors. Neckline needs to be an inch or two hire. I could live with the hem being shorter, if the neckline was a bit more demure and in keeping with the sense of fun she seems to be trying to embrace with this outfit.

    • Jessica Freeman

“Holy Shit” was my immediate verbal reaction to her eyes. I like the dress, she might as well have gone for the trifecta and done yellow shoes.

      • formerlyAnon

Yellow Docs woulda been my choice.

    • formerlyAnon

Now, I wasn’t all that down on Ms. Blanchett for her ensemble (she IS 45) but Elle Fanning is still a teen! Those shoes should have either been a weird confection of florality like the stuff on her shoulder, or (my preference) brightly colored Doc Martin boots. Or hell, black Docs.

    • http://fibonaccisequins.storenvy.com/ Danielle

The multicolor flowers at the shoulder really took me over the edge from meh to oooh.

    • Vegas Girl

Question for all of the blonds out there – Is that her real hair color? Because I know she’s young and probably doesn’t need to dye it yet. But I can’t help thinking that her skin needs a darker shade to keep her from looking washed out all the time.

      • Thomas

It can’t be. Those are some hideous roots showing.

        • Grumpy Girl

I can’t vouch for Ms. Fanning, but I do know natural blondes who have similar root issues; I’m guessing (as a non-geneticist, non-hair-color-expert person), that it is because certain colors/people are super-sensitive to the sun and even a slightly darker color right at the root looks way darker by comparison, and when it’s all her hair. Pictures of a young Grumpy Girl have a similar root-needs-touchup effect, and my mother would likely have disowned me had I tried to ever dyed my hair.

          • Thomas

Ah Maybe that’s it then. But since she’s a celebrity, you would think exceptions could be made for dyeing her hair.

ETA: Just looked up her natural hair color though and it’s brown.

            • Grumpy Girl

Teehee; I am not surprised that as a professional actress, she dies her hair. I wonder what she looks like with brown hair. I so associate the Fannings with this ethereal blonde color, that my imagine fails me. (either that, or it fails me because I’m at work and trying to focus on reviewing project specs.)

            • Vegas Girl

Ah, so a quick google search would have answered my question (and I am a little ashamed that it did not even occur to me to do so). I do wish she would stop with this particular blond shade – I don’t think it works on anyone over the age of 7.

    • KT

I love the yellow eyeliner (never thought I would say that), but I LOATHE the coral colors on her. If this was all rendered in another shade, it would totally work.

    • teensmom99

IF the dress were the color of aqua flowers this would be amazing. I love the shoes, though, but maybe that’s because the time in my life when I most wore pointy high-heeled pumps was age 18.

    • AlisonS

I could be crazy, but I would have liked a yellow wedge to play up the nails and the eyes. 3 bullet points if you will.

    • HeisenbergHattie

      Fun Fun Fun

    • Dino Bonačić

FUN. pure fun in a dress/outfit form.

    • didgerdoni

Love the dress, hate the shoes, physically recoiled at the eyeliner. Why, yes, I am old. Thanks for asking.

    • bassfemme

Love 99% of this look. The yellow around the eyes make me gag. Maybe green, or some day-glo version of another color. Or if she really wanted yellow, there are other things to emphasis. Lip liner, blush, whatever, just move away from that sickly eye.

    • Thomas

Why don’t you guys ever say anything about her hair? Her roots should have been touched up ages ago and I really don’t think that shade of blonde suits her. It washes her out and makes her look like a ghost.

    • cocohall

For a girl who normally appears so pale and washed out that I want to grill her a steak, this is fantastic. Color! Vibrancy! Youthfulness! Her smile says it all – she is having fun and all the rest is just quibbles.

    • mjude

I adore the dress. I will ignore the shoes.

    • FibonacciSequins

The yellow eyeliner and nails (which I like on her, especially at CC) just don’t go with the dress and shoes.

      • Mothra

I dunno. yellow make up always says “liver failure” to me.

        • FibonacciSequins

Normally I’d agree, but she’s a teenager at Comic Con so I’m okay with it.

    • Mothra

I don’t like the yellow eyeliner. It looks like she just came from the optometrist’s office. I don’t think yellow makes for a good make up color on anyone. Well, maybe someone with beautiful dark skin. MAYBE. But I like the dress. Those shoes could be more fun somehow though. Maybe with a strap or something, I dunno. I’m so over that plain, pointy toe shoe. I see it at the office all the time. And if you can wear it to work in a government office, you best not be wearing it on a red carpet. Snap Snap Snap!

    • Freynika

I like the dress, don’t hate the shoes, but I just can’t with the yellow eye makeup. That color should never be that close to an eyeball, even if this is ComicCon. It makes her eyes look like they have some kind of contageous disease that her antibiotic prescription hasn’t cleared up yet to the point she should be out in public.

    • marlie

The dress is great, and I’m happy with the color on her. The shoes are totally a misstep (yes, the almost-but-not-quite-matching color is making my eye twitch too), and I can’t get behind that eye makeup no matter what the age of the wearer or the venue. But still, overall a very good effort.

    • LadyVimes

The jaundice- I mean yellow around her eyes looks like she did it herself. Bets on the makeup artist going “oh honey, NO” and refusing to do it so she did it herself in the car? Just me?

    • evave2

Gosh, uncles, that IS nitpicking at its finest. The girl wore something interesting and cute, I LOVE the yellow make-up, it just makes her look so with-it.
The dress is tres cute. This is the cutest lace dress of the YEAR. (Most of them make me want to barf but his is in SO MANY lively lively colors.) So you rag on the shoes? I think they just ALL go together. Again, I love the yellow eye make-up

    • doodley

Back in the late 70s or so, Miss Piggy released a book called “Miss Piggy’s Guide to Life,” which included the wise words “Never put anything yellow on your face.” Where is Miss Piggy when we need her?

      • demidaemon

Thank god for Miss Piggy! Someone needs to ship a copy of that book to Elle, stat.

    • Cheryl

Love the dress and the yellow eyeliner, but yeah those shoes. She needs something fun, maybe clunky, maybe yellow, perhaps a good ugly shoe. I am fond of an ugly shoe.

      • Qitkat

Now I’m curious, what distinguishes a ‘good’ ugly shoe from a ‘bad’ ugly shoe?

        • Cheryl

You know, I’m not even sure, and I think it’s completely subjective, but sometimes I see a shoe that is indeed an ugly shoe, but there is just something about it that appeals to me. It’s not like I don’t know it’s ugly, it’s that it’s ugly and I love it in all it’s homeliness.

        • formerlyAnon

I think it’s an eye-of-the-beholder thing. I’ve always love a clunky ugly shoe. Some people agree with my choices, some think I’m nuts.

    • evave2

One last thing: she has the most open smile EVER. I actually went to see Maleficent because of the Jolie/Fanning pole dance (hey it wasn’t too long, and I enjoyed them both when they were on screen together) you guys put up and her character seemed so sweet. Not much “acting” but I really like her character. I wanted to say that was the FIRST time I ever saw a movie based on what YOU GUYS showed. Very strange.

    • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

If she’d deleted the yellow from her nails and eyes and used that color in her footwear, all would have been fine. Everyone and their sister is stomping around in yellow shoes, and here is a perfect chance to deploy them.

    • Qitkat

The yellow eye makeup and nails are fun–but only because it’s ComicCon, and youth :)

    • MilaXX

Agreed on all counts. This would have been a great time for a funky sneaker considering it’s comic con

    • J.W.

She looks like she was pollinated by bees with that eye liner.

    • Gatto Nero

The coral against her pale, cool-pink skin not working. Her coloring is begging for cool greens and blues.
A cute, youthful sandal would be better than those serious pumps.

    • http://www.basicallyimcomplicated.com Gabby

This is definitely the wrong color for her. I’d love this dress on Lea Michele…that coral would set her coloring off perfectly.

    • Tlazolteotl

Chucks. This dress needed some Chuck Taylors at SDCC.

    • gracedarling

Mint green Converse would have made me so happy.

    • suzq

Aren’t there 100 pairs of yellow shoes she could have worn somewhere?

I’m hating on the yellow eyes and nails so you don’t have to.

      • siriuslover

I’ll hate along with you, suzq. Can’t get behind the yellow eyes…unless she were doing some awesome cosplay.

    • ktr33

Pretty much 100% in agreement with Uncles. Makes it easy. Less typing.

    • demidaemon

I’m sorry, but i cannot approve the yellow eyeliner. It’s driving me crazy and it’s matching her fingernails. NO. NO. NO. AND NO.

    • Shannon Long

Sooooo cute, I love the jewlery too. And I like the eyeliner and mani, she’s young and can get away with that. It feels honest and natural for a super stylish teen.

    • Andrea Lentz

i think she embraces this all minus the eyeshadow. yikes.

    • Mary Lauer

I wish she had done that eye treatment in a more Elle-friendly color like lavender tho …

    • Lauren Frankel

I’m seventeen and I hate the eye makeup. *shrug* Ah youth, the perfect scapegoat for horrible fashion mistakes.

    • MandyM

I hate the eye make-up more than the shoes. I can ignore bad shoes but that horrible yellow is on her FACE. Ugh!
