Girl, That’s Not Your Dress: Claire Danes in Oscar de la Renta

Posted on April 28, 2014

Something’s recently come to our attention regarding Claire’s style choices lately. Whoever’s making them doesn’t seem to understand what colors work for her. That orange, pink and blue Prada number made her look sallow, and this 1988 “Pretty in Pink”-inspired Junior Prom number is doing really weird things to her.

Not that we think it’s a bad dress. She’s wearing it badly and it’s bouncing off her skin tone, making it look waxy or something, but we just want you to stare hard at this dress for a few seconds and then picture this:

Right? Girl, pack that shit up and FedEx it off to Miss Lancome-at-the-moment. She’ll make it sing. You should be in richer, darker colors or the occasional pale washed-out ones. Leave the acid pinks for the ladies who were born to wear them.

The skirt makes me wonder if she has hidden pockets filled with Cadbury Mini Eggs.

The hair is great though, I love that color.

    • Mmmmm….Cadbury mini eggs….

    • CPK1

that would be awesome. A dress filled with mini eggs. The best – and most addictive- candy ever,

  • Carrie

Lupita would make it sing! Pale girls just don’t do good in neons. This is hardly news and her stylists should know better!

That said, I still don’t like the way the dress lies. It looks like it’s bunching or something. Hmm. Maybe we can send Lupita a better dress in this shade?

    • 3boysful

I wish someone would compile a list like “#13 – Pale girls don’t look good in neon” (and they would be guidelines, since there are probably exceptions here and there), for everyone’s easy reference.

      • Carrie

That would be handy, wouldn’t it? Then people wouldn’t have excuses for screwing it up.

      • Sarah

Yeah, a lot of people have done it. Tim Gunn comes to mind, as well as Nina Garcia. The thing about those lists is that when you start looking in the book, the exception tends to be YOU. For instance, I believe it was Tim who said a lady should never go to work with wet hair. I read that while at work with wet hair (I have to be there an hour before we open, and I honestly don’t care what the other three people around me think if I show up damp.) But yeah, if I didn’t already know, a thing like “Pale girls don’t look good in neon” might stick in my pale head.

        • Kitten Mittons

I always love it when I’m defying a fashion rule at the very moment that I’m reading it. It probably happens far too often, which should tell me something (or several things).

    • littlemac8

I saw other pictures of her in this dress and it is so tight across the bust that I can’t believe she didn’t pop a dart. Strange choice. If she had professional advice on this choice, heads should roll! BTW, I agree her hair color is very soft and pretty.

      • ampg

She has some serious issues fitting her boobs correctly into a dress. I don’t know why – it’s not as if she has an odd shape or anything.

  • Cristina

I think her hair and makeup look lovely, so she gets some points there.

  • Mary Lauer

Way too much stark eyeliner. It looks like she and Cathy Cambridge are sharing an eye pencil and makeup tips!

    • lexilexi

      Yes, and SJP too!

  • Glam Dixie

It’s also doing heinous things to her boobal area.

  • VicD

Lupita would wear tragic matchy shoes though, so you’d have to pack up some shoes to send too.

    • Sarah

I don’t like Claire’s, either. They are reminding me of cigar wrappers.

      • 3boysful

While they are probably too high, they look like they need to be in Atlantic City, with a portable oxygen canister, at the slots.

  • ashtangajunkie

Gorgeous from the neck up though. Bad neon from the neck down. ‘Bad Neon’ shall be my band name.

  • whaddami

to be fair, might also be the yellow backdrop that’s throwing off both the dress color and her skin tone (I’ve got similar coloring, and I usually have to keep yellow as far from me as possible)

    • paginatrix

I agree. Maybe bright pink isn’t her color, but yellow can mess up everything in the vicinity.

    • Darcy H

Backdrops must be a stylists nightmare, because a blinding backdrop like this or one of those super busy floral ones can totally ruin what might have otherwise been a good look. (Not to say that this would have been, because one you picture anything on Lupita it’s impossible for a mere mortal to make it look good.)

    • Violentcello

That’s exactly what I was thinking. Not saying it’s a great dress, but I wouldn’t see that color and immediately think, “Ew, no. Not for Ms. Danes.”

    • Julie Ree

As an interior designer, I can tell you that anyone or anything, especially in the purple family, against that yellow is not easy for anyone to pull off and look good.

  • Liz

I am liking the hair color though, sometimes I think her blonde is too harsh.

    • Let it out

I think she looks better as a brunette.

  • Jessica Freeman

Yes, this is definitely a 17 year old’s dress. All wrong.

  • Mothra

Too tight on top, too bubbly on the bottom, those shoes look cruel, but she looks pretty good and I like the hair. When did she have her baby? She’s in terrific shape and looks healthy. I think I am in the minority–I think the color doesn’t look half bad on her. Thankfully she didn’t completely match her shoes or her lip to it.

  • StillGary

Don’t know if Lupita would want this though — I think Selena Gomez wants this dress!

  • marlie

Claire’s hair and makeup look good. I like the shoes, but not with this dress. The dress… aside from being the wrong color, the fit is *terrible* on her. I love those earrings, though.

  • sugarkane105

I still think it would look a wrinkled mess on Lupita. The skin tone is not the problem here.

  • LaSylphide

Not only not her dress, but not her face. I really didn’t recognize her. Not just the color is questionable, but that eye makeup makes her look…odd somehow, like a Claire Danes impersonator.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Really hate the shape more than the color. Just does absolutely nothing for her top half or bottom half.

  • PeggyOC

I dislike dresses that do this with the hem. It always looks like the skirt is caught in your stockings or the hem is falling out. That said, yes, this color should go to Lupita or maybe Angela Bassett.

  • Tanya Wade

    Eye makeup. So harsh!

    • Darcy H

Right? Why is this the default eye look?

  • The color and stupid hem of that dress make her look childish. I don’t think this a great cut for her. And her hair is really pretty.

  • Judy_J

I’m not a fan of the heavy black eyeliner completely outlining the entire eye. It’s too much.

  • Crystal

The combination of that background and that pink are making her look so damn yellow it’s insane. But her hair looks gorgeous. Idk about that makeup though.

  • Jecca2244

i honestly don’t look this would look good on anyone past junior prom. the detailing on the dress looks super cheap.

  • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

    head looks good though.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

That bubble skirt isn’t anyone’s dress. I thought we were through with that ghastly trend a few years ago….please don’t tell me it is back!

  • Those shoes concern me.

  • Sara__B

She needs to ditch (or at least soften) the under-eye liner. It’s even less flattering than the dress.

  • 25or6to4

SJP eyeliner aside, her hair and makeup look fabulous. Also, while I do applaud the fact that she is wearing color, she really needs to identify her power colors and stick to them.

  • Betsy

My Crayola box of 96 called this color “Orchid”. And it’s a hard color to wear. Especially with the color of her hair, at present. I think of my dark-brunette daughter (half Japanese), with her golden-tan skin. Still maybe not the right person. But Lupita, yes! Especially if she can get her lipstick color not to clash with the dress color. Oh, and if she can find a really CUTE pair of shoes to go with it.

    • alyce1213

I was about to say, before reading your post, that this is really more orchid than pink. The background yellow isn’t helping the dress or her hair.
      I love Crayolas so much.

    • Kayceed

Orchid is Pantone’s color the year. Which still doesn’t make it easy for a pale blonde to wear.

      • marlie

And you know that everyone is going to WANT to wear it because it’s the “color of the year,” regardless of whether or not it works for them.

      • I saw this & thought “Radiant orchid is not a white girl’s colour”. So many women can make it sing, why not leave it to them?

      • demidaemon

That’s right. On a good note: maybe we’ll actually see people in a color this year. On a bad note: It might end up a lot like the above.

    • MilaXX

Orchid looks good on anyone with warm blue undertones in their skin.

  • Frecks

It’s the color of the background of the step and repeat that’s making her skin look sallow, not the dress. Even the stylist might not have had a heads-up on that.

The fit in the bodice is awful. Her girls look like they’ve been bound.

Otherwise, had this been a size up and not against a yellow-toned background, it’s really nicely styled. I like the cut of the dress very much, and love the earrings. A pretty, neutral sandal is a good choice with an otherwise retro, conservatively-cut cocktail dress.

  • jilly_d

Dat hair, though. More Hollywood blondes could learn from this. It doesn’t have to be so yellow, ladies.

  • CanIbeFrank

Remember the whole color thing–determining if one is a Spring, Summer, Fall or Winter and then wearing colors accordingly? Really, it comes down to whether one has bluish undertones or yellowish. We all need to get back to that, at least in some form. Jamie should wear “spring” and “fall” colors (those with warm/orange undertones). Do that and 90% of the color problems go away. Even if the knowing your season thing is passe, the idea isn’t.

  • somebody blonde

I think the dress color would look just fine if she were up against a blue background rather than a warm yellow. That was just unlucky.

  • brown-eyed girl

I’m never a big fan of that kind of hemline. That black eyeliner is a bit harsh, too, but . . . she still looks terrific even on an off day.

  • Danielle

    The headsuit is phenomenal tho.

  • FibonacciSequins

That’s definitely not her dress and that’s not her eyeliner. It’s like the makeup artist is trying to make her look like Julie Bowen.

  • twocee

Wait. Is that…a BUBBLE skirt??? Are those back?

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I know, right? Is the zombie apocalypse getting ready to start?

    • decormaven

I had the same reaction. Aaargh…

    • MilaXX

      yep, they’re back.

  • crash1212

I don’t think she should ever agree to stand in front of a yellow back drop again. Ever.

  • Little_Olive

It’s the bubble (yuck) skirt, plus the fact that the shoes were caught in the middle of providing contrast and disappearing.

That said, I think that is the best I’ve seen her hair look in ages. Perfect color for her complexion.

  • Synnae

I like the nude shoes – interesting and still elongating. And her hair looks fantastic. Dress and make-up need to go.

  • Cheryl

Ugh, I don’t even think it’s Lupita’s dress, although the colour would look beautiful on her, but I have an irrational hatred of bubble hems.

  • Imasewsure

I think Lu could make this ugly bubble hem work (but she would f#%k up the shoes so maybe we should just call it a day)

  • Mrs. C

Pantone’s color of the year: vibrant orchid.

  • nannypoo

    Her hair looks pretty.

  • lunchcoma

I think Claire really needs to get a color analysis done. She repeatedly tends to pick things that make her look washed out.

  • Scorsagian

I usually don’t do well at TLo’s game of who would wear a dress better in a GTNYD situation but before I’d read their mention of Lupita, I thought of her wearing this.

  • I had this dress in ’88 in black and wore it to my Jr Prom. My hair was A LOT higher tho;o)

  • Denise Rambo

I’m not crazy about the black eyeliner on the bottom.

  • melanie0866

It’s an awful dress. Squishes her chest, it’s too tight around the midriff, and the bubble skirt is just too 1990.

But you’re right, Lupita could rock it.

  • unbornfawn

Definitely not her dress. Way too tight in the bust. The skirt is too fussy for her to pull off. The color doesn’t suit her. Yup. Lupita would rock this dress.

  • nicewilliams

Bubble hem?! Claire mustve reached WAY back in her closet for this 2009 gem.

  • demidaemon

Well, I wouldn’t want Lupita wearing this unless someone first fixes that jacked-up hem. Come on, now, designers. Are you really sending out stuff that looks like you had eight hours to sew it?

    • MilaXX

I think it’s a bubble skirt that needs a bit of a steaming.

      • demidaemon

Maybe. But if it’s a bubble skirt, that just brings up a whole host of other issues.

  • cocohall

Pretty dress. Wrong color. Solid gold dancer shoes. Lovely hair, Miss Claire.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Given that Claire’s hair and makeup look so good, this dress is bringing her down, especially the shape of that skirt. Bad stylist, Bad!

  • macwell

I don’t understand the appeal of a dress whose bottom looks like this. It’s probably looks an even bigger mess on a hanger, so why would stylists try to make it ‘a thing’?

  • MilaXX

Yep, yep, yep. Not her dress. Also red polish with and orchid pink dress? Points for having a pedicure with an open toe shoe, but none for wearing the wrong color. That said, this color in emerald green might work.

  • dmkava

  • LadyVimes

Her hair is SO much better than the last post. Wow. Now about that strange….dress….thing.

  • kt

the dress color is nice, it is the hiddy background that wrecks it

  • ItAin’tMe

I love her toes and those shoes.

  • cowper

I looked and saw Kristin Chenoweth eyes.

  • DeniseSchipani

    Her hair looks lovely.

  • mcbishop

I don’t think it’s the pink. I think it’s the yellow background that killed it. Does ANYONE look good next to it?

  • sagecreek

Oh, my. That is truly unfortunate.

  • aquamarine17

it doesn’t help that the background is that shade of yellow or any yellow. a different eye makeup style would be nice. please

  • Ma. Gabriella Dutari

Yes, this is Lupita’s dress indeed!

  • malarson2

Ms. Danes is SO long-waisted, it must be hard. Sigh.

  • Qitkat

The bodice flattens her figure, the eyeliner is passe and aging, so why is it everywhere?, the skirt badly needs a good steaming, but the background color is atrocious, that to me is what is making her look sallow. This dress would look cute and modern if the bodice were black, well fitted, and the skirt left this color but unwrinkled. I hate the black eyeliner more than the bubble skirt, but they are both poorly executed in this case. Love her hair though, and the shoes are OK.

  • Liza Ortiz

She is not pale, she has golden hue to her skin, I blame the backdrop for making this look bad, well that and the fit in the bust.
