Mad Men Ring The Bell

Posted on March 22, 2012

The “Mad Men”pre-Season 5 premier juggernaut continues as cast members ring the Opening Bell of the New York Stock Exchange. We always thought that was kind of a strange “honor” to bestow on anyone.

Jon? Christina? January? John? Please drape yourself in shame over the fact that you all got shown up by a twelve-year-old in the style sweepstakes.

Hamm’s jacket isn’t fitting him all that well, but we appreciate the vest. Slattery’s okay. The ladies didn’t do bad. Christina’s outfit is actually kind of cute and more flattering than 90% of her choices. We’re just not nuts about the hair and makeup. January’s look is perfectly serviceable as well.

But Miss Kiernan is WERQing that chic little shift! You go and GET IT, Sally Draper!

    Disappointed in January’s shoes.

    • MilaXX

Agreed, they don’t go well with the outfit.

    • Rand Ortega

Agree 1000%. A red, pink or purple Louboutin pump would’ve set that dress on fire!

      • ballerinawithagun

Ooh Yes, some color with B & W.

  • NDC_IPCentral

I am so revved about Season 5 and 9PM EDT this coming Saturday.  My sis is psyched, my best friend here at work is psyched, as is her good friend (friend o’ mine, too).  I’m planning on a MM Marathon retrospective over the weekend (and post-Friday chemo) as a big ol’ treat for moi.

I do think that the MM gang here looks a little too-darn-hot-in-Manhattan-in-March wilted.  Bet the HVAC at the NYSE wasn’t up to the task.  It’s sure not here at IP Central!

    All the best,

  • Sarah Thomas

When I saw the little clip of christina’s outfit, I thought it was a knee length black sleeveless sheath dress with a white organza collar. And I coveted it badly.

    • Sara__B

The dress you describe (or the top with a structured skirt) would have looked better on Christina than those too-long trousers do.

      • kimmeister

And eek, is she wearing white shoes???

    • EditKitten

Knee-length would have been AWESOME. And then she had to go and ruin it with the actual length. Sigh.

      • ballerinawithagun

Yes, she looked fabulous in the first shot, then I got to the draggy pants, sad.

  • janinedm

In their defense, you have to show up super early to do the openng bell in order to get through security…

    • melizer

No way in hell I would be all smiles!

  • dress_up_doll

Sally looks adorbs! Jon & John look a bit sweaty. Good, but still sweaty.

  • donnaINseattle

You are so right about Miss K — picture perfect! And look how tall she is getting! Won’t it be great when Sally can stare Betty straight in the eye during their no-doubt upcoming continued confrontations!?

  • mommyca

they all look great! but Sally Draper is just fantastic! (by the way, what a bummer that Elisabeth Moss is missing all the action prior to the premiere…. I guess she is doing something else… a play somewhere? I think I read something about that).

    • par3182

She’s shooting ‘Top of the Lake’ – a Jane Campion mini-series in New Zealand.

  • beebee10

Sally D for the win! that girl (or her mother or both) has got style!

  • Paigealicious

    • JDreesen

yes, i think everyone is so in awe of her blouse choice that they must not have scrolled all the way down the picture?

because DAYAM.  that’s the first thing i noticed!  and therefore the only thing.

      • fauxhawk

Me, too. Looks uncomfortable (and I wish I could unsee it)>

      • Paigealicious

Me too. At first I thought it was something on my computer screen, but nope…you can see it in both pics.

  • Lisa Weaver

Slattery’s hair is looking a bit more “Mad Scientist” than “Mad Men”

  • Nancy Abrams

Christina’s outfit is everything we’ve ever asked of her:
*Just the right amount of skin showing at the neckline
*Bow breaks up the mass of her breasts
*Contrasting sleeves define her body so that her breasts do not visually run into her arms
*Fit looks comfortable and is not too tight
*Flared pants balance her top half
*Belt-like detail shows off her waist and minimizes her stomach

All in all, a great job.

As for the men, trying too hard to look like stock brokers.

    • Ogden1990

Scroll up a few comments…there is a minor flaw in her outfit.

      • Nancy Abrams

I meant to say that her pants were too long. But all in all, that’s a minor quibble compared to all the good. Better too long than too short since the extra length makes her legs look thinner and longer.

        • Ogden1990

I was referring to the unfortunate … hate even writing it …. cameltoe.

  • Paola Thomas

Yay Christina – you’ve broken up the bust area with that cute little scarf and you’re wearing a soft warm colour close to your face. See how much better you look! The flappy too long trousers are a mistake, but baby steps…

  • golden_valley

I know we’re here to talk about fashion, but I have to ask.  Why is the cast of Mad Men in the NYSE?  What on earth does the advertising business of the ’60’s have to do with Wall Street now?

    • JasmineAM

If I’m not mistaken, the cast of Jersey Shore also rang the bell in the past.

    • Nancy Abrams

It’s become a regular stop on the public relations tour for new movies, shows, products, etc. The east coast version of the unveiling of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

      • mountainFashionista

Not to mention athletes, politicians, and anyone else whose publicist is on top of things…  It’s just become a PR “thing” that doesn’t actually have anything to do with how Wall Street operates.

Here’s an interesting article about no one’s wanting to ring the closing bell on a terrible trading day:

    • alyce1213

All manner of flotsam and jetsam have rung the bell.

  • Barbara Guttman

Oh look at you Christina, breaking up that long black column with some texture changed and white accents!  It’s a complete outfit at last.  She looks quite put together here, though I’m not digging the hair or makeup.  It’s a little limp and sallow.

  • CassandraMortmain

Kiernan Shipka is wearing nude pumps.  Sweet and age-appropriate but nude pumps nonetheless.  And a shade of nude that really doesn’t work with her gray shift dress.  Plus, she looks like she’s in costume.  Not feeling the WERQ at all.  Everyne else looks perfectly fine if not very exciting.

  • Kiltdntiltd

Here John, let me help you out of that jacket, you’ll be much more comfortable. Oh, and while your at it, that vest looks a mite, confining,…

    • kimmeister

I was getting all excited, thinking that finally someone thinks John Slattery is the hot one (which is what I think), until I realized that it’s Jon who is wearing the vest.  Sigh . . .

      • Kiltdntiltd

Oh you’d get no arguments from me about him either. I’d be happy to “help him out of his hampering things” anytime.

  • nancylee61

I am not good at doing my hair, but I swear, I do a better job to go to work than Hendricks did on her hair. It looks limp and unkempt. And do you all think a little make-up or powder, a la 1960s to kill the shine, would have hurt her?? I don’t understand when actresses, whose job depends on appearances, seem to not care about their appearance? So strange.

  • MK03

    Kiernan is freakin’ adorable.

  • sarahofalessergod

I find myself coveting half the things that Kiernan Shipka wears.  In my defense, I am 4’10”.  Then again, I’m also 30.

  • A Shiny O’Connor

Hamm’s tie is a tad off tone.

  • PastryGoddess

OMG Christina is wearing a V-neck.  Did hell freeze over?

  • ringthing

What’s so hilarious at the NYSE? These guys are all grinning their heads off. Kiernan does look adorable.

  • Rand Ortega

OMG, John Slattery is so gorgeous I can’t stand it!
Are his feet inordinately big? Or am I just wishful thinking?

  • Lilithcat

Christina looks awful!  Her trousers are dragging on the floor, her hair looks as though she’s just been tumbled in the back of the limo, and she needs powder.

Jon Hamm needs a shave.  Slattery and Jones are just okay.

    The 12-year-old is killing it.

  • Lilak

Dressed like they’ve got to go directly back to work at their respective offices (except for Miss K, who should be rewarded with some shopping, a lovely lunch and a matinee).

  • miagain

    Sally Draper for the WIN!!

  • Sarah Dickerson

Christina’s makeup is horribly distracting.  That lip color makes her teeth look downright gray.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I like everything about Kiernan except her shoes. I agree on Christina — it’s a better look for her than she manages 90% of the time. I think the shape of the top/bottom combo is very flattering. And I like her hair, but not her makeup. For someone who has been playing The Hot Girl for most of her adult life, she seems not to have much confidence in her looks.

  • nannypoo

This is the best I have ever seen Christina look. Her boobs are completely under control.

  • Tracey Magyar

Perhaps Christina needs to go up a pants size. Her ummm…..ladyparts….are quite well defined.

  • kingderella

oh my, you guys are kind today. i think jones and hendricks are looking pretty bad, and theyve both made the mistake they often make. hendricks is wearing something terribly unflattering and jones is failing at ‘edgy’.

kiernan has a smile that will save your soul. also, a very chic dress.

  • formerlyAnon

Yup. Whomever advises the young Miss K. is doing very well indeed.

I’ve got to add: Mr. Hamm. You knew you were being photographed, and you bothered to wear (judging by the black/white/grey group color scheme) an intentionally business-like & subdued suit.  Was the stubble an intentional and ridiculous mark of personal style? You’re a mature and attractive man wearing several thousand dollars worth of business suit. (Electric razors. Not ideal, but useful for those with heavy/dark beard growth.)

  • Mike Holcomb

Regardless of the fashion, I think these are some of the best pictures I’ve seen of these guys (I know the lighting isn’t perfect but I’m looking beyond that). The pic of John Hamm and Christina is charming. The smiles look genuine (whether they are or not) especially for the hour of the day and the ridiculousness of the event. January actually looks like she’s not a bitch 100% of the time.

For me, the smiles overshadowed any of the fashion missteps they may have made. Can’t wait for Sunday night, I’m so glad to have Mad Men fill in the gap between the end of The Walking Dead and the beginning of Breaking Bad. Three cheers for AMC!

  • shiftercars

Christina’s camel toe is killing me.

    • Sophie Collier

LOL, yeah, kind of noticed that too, I did.

    • Sophie Collier

LOL, yeah, kind of noticed that too, I did.

  • Gus Casals

Kiernan is IT girl, no doubt about it.
Is it too early to start the Emmy campaign for her before seeing a minute of footage of the season?

  • Mefein

Looking at that one shot of Don, January, and Kiernan, with John’s fairly tan face and the ladies’ pale ones, I wonder if they’re going to capture the late ’60s extreme tanning craze.  It’s funny, my aunt has this great rogues gallery on her wall where you can see her, my mother, and the other sisters through the decades, and the ones from the sixties really stand out because they look SO freakishly dark compared to all the rest.  I’m trying to imagine Christina and January with George Hamilton tans, since their milky skin is going to start becoming unfashionable, and I can’t quite get there.  One thing for sure, in the name of accuracy they can’t be orange, so if they do tan ’em up, they’ll have to do it the old-fashioned way.

    • alyce1213

Break out the Bain de Soleil.

  • FashionShowAtLunch

I do love a shift.  Those are the dresses that make me envy ladies with smaller racks.  sigh.

  • kcarb1025

Do you think Kiernan’s parents would mind if I adopted her?

  • fauxhawk

all i can see is that horrible camel toe joan is displaying. shudder.

  • bellafigura1

What a grim bunch of fashion choices, yipes. The kid is cute but hell, it’s spring, you’re a kid, howsabout a color?  There are lots of ’em, just waiting for ya!

  • SRQkitten

Too funny, that was my first thought when i saw those pictures, that the youngest member of the party got it right.

Her dress reminds me of a dress I had when I was about her age. Boo hiss to the idea that young girls can’t/shouldn’t do black.

  • butter nut

christina is determined to be the queen of frumptastica.  it breaks my heart.

  • Paige Boerman

I like Christina’s look – EXCEPT FOR THE CAMEL TOE. Look at your life, look at your choices, sweetie.

  • Alex McGeagh

OMG. The cameltoe on CH. Jesus on a biscuit. How did you two not mention this travesty?!? AHHH.

  • EEKstl

Kiernan is blowing everybody else away here.  Love that color on her – and in this case the nude shoes work.

  • Lauren Lynch Fox

Christina looks like a waitress (and I hate saying that BECAUSE I LOVE HER AND EVERYTHING SHE REPRESENTS!!!). The little girl is blowing them all out of the water!

  • lilazander

That young girl rocks basically every time and she’s so beautiful. She steals the event.

  • allj

Am I the only one homing in on Christina’s cameltoe?

  • margaret meyers

Jon Hamm’s jackets often hit him ab0ve the crotch of his pants.  That’s not a flattering line.  I know he is not a willowy lad, but that line of his jacket, and the fact that he often has things in his pockets (and I do not mean his junk), makes him look heavy in the hip and thigh.

  • Megan Patterson

Awww Kiernan’s growing into such a little lady! It’s making me feel old.
