Fresh from a dazzling awards season in which she unveiled one eye-popping frock after another, Chase Infiniti is getting back to the business of promoting her next project, Testaments, the sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale. She is evidently in a burnout velvet phase.

Hair, makeup and jewelry — all stunning, as always. The dress? BIG NO. Look, we tend to find burnout velvet tacky and low-rent, even when it’s deployed well. Here, it’s not deployed all that well. The color is dreary but we might have felt a lot more kindly toward this design if it didn’t have that black panel at the bottom of the skirt. It does nothing for the design and it tends to make the velvet look worse.

This is a LOT, but consider this: We’re seeing a rising trend of big ol’ ballgowns on the red carpet and even though we think that style can get stale and overblown very quickly, we are nonetheless primed and ready for it because it may finally put the nail in the coffin of the sheer dress trend. We must encourage all the lady stars to get their Marie Antoinette on if we’d like to put an end to seeing their panties all the time. This is overdesigned and overworked, but the color looks amazing on her and we like that drama of it all. She was smart not to pile on the jewelry.
