We gave a couple of the Oscar-nominated attendees the spotlight treatment (here and here) but it’s time to yell our opinions about everyone else’s outfits at the Film Independent Spirit Awards. This is always a fun red carpet to cover because people are in the middle of Oscar campaigns, so there’s a lot of stepping-up but there’s also a sense of playfulness and lack of stodginess in the range of styles on display. Now let’s get to the aforementioned yelling.
Amy Madigan in Bottega Veneta

This is surprisingly conventional for her, but it’s very sharp and smart.
Archie Madekwe in Ferragamo

We aren’t opposed to silk scarves for men, but there are so many ways it can come off awkward or pretentious. This would be one of them. Nice outfit otherwise.
Dylan O’Brien in Dior Homme

This is kind of cute and we can tell that the pieces are high quality but the grooming brings the look down. We’re not opposed to a scruffy look, but it doesn’t go with Dior Homme.
Ego Nwodim in Giambattista Valli

This is pretty but we hate the shape of the bust.
Erin Doherty in LII

She loves to play with weird shapes and it really works for her. The earrings and bold lip are great touches but we think an opportunity was missed to finish this off with a killer footwear choice. We might even have liked boots.
François Arnaud

Welcome aboard the Enterprise, Ambassador. One of our crew members will be along shortly to seduce you. Don’t worry. It’s just an alien parasite.
Issa Rae in Retrofete

This is pretty hot.
Jane Levy in Gabriela Hearst

It’s very burn the witch/tied to a stake. A pendant or choker would have been our recommendation.
Jenny Slate in Altuzarra

Meh. She looks hot but the dress isn’t interesting.
Joel Edgerton

This looks great. He has that Aussie-specific quality of being able to work a double-breasted suit with a tank top.
Judy Greer

The top half is cute, but the bottom half is very church organist. We’d have rather seen pants.
Kaia Gerber in Givenchy

GOD. Enough with the black lady lawyer pumps. Granted, she looks incredibly hot and only homosexual men are looking at her shoes.
Kali Reis

This looks surprisingly great. She’s softened her style a bit but she hasn’t sacrificed drama.
Keke Palmer in Christian Dior

Girl, your dress is a mess.
Kirsten Dunst (in Valentino) and Jesse Plemons (in Buck Mason)

They’re so cute. We should be calling her dress insufferably twee, but she has a knack for working this sort of style with a wryness or sense of irony. To be fair, she’s always loved the girly/romantic styles. We do hate that cord sash, though.
Lamorne Morris in Canali

No arguments here.
Lola Petticrew in Hector Maclean

It’s very Dracula’s Daughter and we love it but those pumps wound us.
Natasha Rothwell in Lanvin

It’s looking a little Christmas pageant. She just needs wings and a tinsel halo.
Nina Hoss in Simone Rocha

All of our objections to wearing satin on the red carpet just went out the window because this fascinatingly, hilariously weird and we can’t stop looking at it. The chain and padlock may be our favorite part. And yes, we’re thrilled she didn’t opt for lawyer pumps.
Rebecca Hall in Jil Sander

The design and the pulling just make it look like she’s trying to zip up a dress that doesn’t fit her. We loathe those shoes but we feel we must support them for at least not being courtroom pumps.
Regina King in Etro

Pure fabulous.
Wagner Moura in Louis Vuitton

We love his sense of color and pattern. He always stands out. This looks great on him.
Zoey Deutch in Valentino

It’s a Valentino that looks like a Chanel and it doesn’t fit her.
