Benito called up his friends Steffi and Ricky and said “Hey, how about we show the world what America really is and also look totally sickeningly hot while doing it?” Steffi and Ricky clapped their hands and agreed. There are going to be a lot of words written about last night’s Super Bowl halftime show (there have been a lot written already), and we’re going to have things to say about it in today’s podcast, but for now, let’s just be shallow about it and look at the clothes.
BAD BUNNY IN ZARA

He sported Zara for his number, and considering how meaning-laden and culturally specific every part of the show was, it was probably a pointed reference to the brand’s Spanish origins. The number on the jersey is a reference to his uncle’s birth year. The rope belt is a poignant reference to classic jibaro style. White is of course commonly worn throughout Caribbean and Latin American cultures in both high and low settings and Bad Bunny has always made it a centerpiece of his own style. We love how easily the costume straddled that line, from sports jersey to fine suit. Several right wing chuds thought he was sporting “OCASIO” on his back in some sort of salute to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez because that’s where your mind tends to go when you don’t see an entire ethnic group as real, distinct human beings.
LADY GAGA IN LUAR

Just a patriotic red, white and blue girl singing her heart out. We did the gay gasp when she was revealed. It’s not for us to really game out the choices here, but he and Gaga are friends and while he could have invited any number of Latina artists to join him, the cross-cultural imagery was probably more important to him. Put bluntly: he deliberately chose a white ally to join him. It helps that she’s also a global superstar. The dress is gorgeous and the whole look is clearly latin-inspired without being weird about it. She is sport the Flor de Maga, which is the national flower of Puerto Rico.
RICKY MARTIN

And then Uncle Ricky showed up and we clapped our hands with glee. It was wonderful to see space given to another Puerto Rican icon, but we were genuinely touched that a gay man was elevated for a moment in this glorious, celebratory, inclusive vision of America. Love his outfit.
