One final check-in on the late Toronto International Film Festival as a way of breaking up all of this Emmys coverage. Cannes, Venice, and TIFF are generally the opening salvos of awards season and after years of documenting this stuff, we can spot a gunning-for-a-trophy dress from a mile away. In other words, here’s If I Had Legs I’d Kick You star Rose Byrne at the TIFF premiere, delivering a message:
We tend to dislike dusty pinks and mauves and we’ve been decrying the overuse of pinks post-Barbie and Wicked, but we really love this dress. She doesn’t tend to go for such classically elegant styles, but what makes this work for her is how it’s got these minor little twists on the classic design, namely the irregular pleats and beading. It’s unusual and modern, but still has that prestige vibe to it. The styling’s off, however. The hair looks too casual and the earrings look too formal.
