May December star Charles Melton joined the film’s director Todd Haynes on the red carpet at the NYFCC Awards before stepping inside to accept the Best Supporting Actor win. We’ve been bitching and whining for a while that he doesn’t put much effort into his style, but we’re going to have to amend that.
Sometimes, it’s less about effort and more about personal expression. He’s been extremely consistent in his clear love of black, loose-fitting menswear in slightly unusual shapes. When it comes to style, there’s a big part of us that has to put that kind of consistency before any of our own complaints. To have a vision of how you want to look and then to execute it (with the help of a stylist, of course) so invariably indicates that this is who he is and what he wants to say about himself. It’s not always entirely to our tastes (we’d have preferred practically anything but that white tank), but we appreciate it for what it is. Besides, it’s not easy to navigate the awards track stylishly as a male star. If you want to avoid the stale cliches (standard suits and tuxes), you have to be very picky in order to maintain a prestige actor vibe and not tip over into clown clothes.
