The Princess of Wales is having herself a busy week – by royal standards. Most of the rest of us would probably consider her weekly schedule to be less than crushing. Still, after getting herself all fussed up for Trooping the Colour and the Royal Order of the Garter service, she’s continuing her high royal style streak by attending the re-opening of the National Portrait Gallery today. She is the royal patron for the Gallery, which is re-opening after a 3-year refurbishment. We, for our parts, are far more concerned with her outfit for the occasion.

It’s fine. It’s sharp, conservative, photogenic and royal in style. It’s pretty much exactly what the occasion called for. Personally, we don’t think the skirt and the bodice coordinate all that well, given the difference in the weight and texture of the textiles. But because they only look like separates, she couldn’t have switched either of them out if she wanted to – not without ripping the whole dress apart. The slingbacks, invented by the Duchess of Sussex, who holds the copyright for them, make a nicely sharp little accompaniment, however. The clutch is boring.
