Sebastian Stan and Lily James stepped out on an honest-to-Pete red carpet (for a photo call) to celebrate the upcoming premiere of Hulu’s Pam & Tommy, and for that, we thank their presumably vaxxed and boosted asses profusely.
They each took a style approach completely opposite from the other for the occasion.
SEBASTIAN STAN IN SANDRO
Sebastian got as far away from the “bad boy” rock star image of the character and opted instead to dress like your pretend boyfriend for the evening, assuming your evening is being spent at a second cousin’s wedding. The style is a little dull but the color of the suit brings out his eyes. We don’t particularly love the slightly off match of the shirt and that collar clearly calls for a tie. He should have a dark shirt with a subtle print to make this more interesting.
LILY JAMES IN ATELIER VERSACE
This … let’s be generous and call it “ensemble,” sent us on a journey. Our first impression was that she’d really ramped up the tacky as a sort of homage to Pamela Anderson’s own red carpet style. But then it occurred to us that we literally could not remember much about Lily’s own style so we clicked on her tag and were suddenly reminded that she has more than her share of tacky or questionable red carpet choices. In fact, the last time we gave her a solo spotlight (a full two-and-half years go, hence our lack of memory regarding her style because everything is Covid’s fault now), we said, “It’s going to take a long time and a lot of work to get us to forget this one.” Turns out, it just took a pandemic, but we digress.
Even so, she’s never really gone this route before and when you take it in conjunction with the oh-so-Pammy mani-pedi, this feels as much homage as it does personal statement. Granted, everyone’s seen the pictures, so she has no real reason to remind everyone that she’s got a slamming bod and is right for the role. Girl, you went viral last year. On the other hand, some sort of English Tea Rose romantic look or pretentious Prestige Actress gown would surely seem wrong for a premiere like this one. We’re kind of torn, because we don’t particularly love the trend among some actors to come to a premiere dressed according to a theme or in character, but this tacky getup just feels right for the night. Her team wisely dialed back the hair and makeup, which keeps this from lapsing into drag.
