We are informed that this isn’t a remake of the 1973 film or a sequel to its 2023 sequel The Exorcist: Believer, but is instead a “new radical take” that is “set in The Exorcist universe.” Personally, we don’t see the point of trying to slot it into some sort of MCU-esque devil continuity. There have been probably a hundred or more films about exorcisms since the William Friedkin film and the only reason to try and make this film connected to that one is because it’s always been the most successful and critically acclaimed film on the topic. Director Mike Flanagan has significant horror bona fides, so for us, he would be the draw, not some questionable connection to a half-century old film. We’ll reserve further judgment until we see a trailer. For now, Scar looks unglamorous, which is how you know things are serious. In the real world, this is just a “putting money in the meter” outfit or “running for a pack of smokes” one, but in the world of Hollywood costume design, this is A Woman With A Problem.
