And now for a look at the sober, professional red carpet awards season campaign of Best Actor Nominee and Marty Supreme star Timothee Chalamet. No, really. But first…

The stunting. When he was promoting Marty Supreme, he undertook so many publicity stunts that the press wound up writing about how much stunting he was doing.

From standing on top of the Vegas Sphere to pop-up shops selling Marty Supreme gear, to scripted Zoom videos, the campaign to promote the film has been aggressive and ultimately fairly successful, leading A24 to one of its biggest openings and, of course, landing its star a sled of awards nominations. But there’s a sharp difference between Timmee when he’s in box office promotion mode (as he is in the above very themey choices) and Timmee when he’s in awards season consideration mode and we’re not sure people realize it.

If there’s any message he’s been sending this season, it’s that he doesn’t think the red carpet is a particularly effective promotional platform anymore. That may turn out to be true in the long run — or even in the short run if he winds up winning.

But his days of wearing chic, envelope-pushing styles on the red carpet are clearly well behind him and we don’t think it’s likely that he’ll ever return to that style.

He’s very wedded to the idea that you stunt like crazy to sell tickets, but you don’t work too hard to campaign for awards.

And while he doesn’t dress poorly if the situation calls for a little effort…

There’s a very studied indifference to the idea of fashion mattering to him or his work.

He’s trying to thread a needle here and we remain interested to see if it works: he’s wearing the biggest luxury brand names in menswear, which is expected of him at this time, but he’s trying very hard to make it seem like it doesn’t matter.

It’s possible this above-it stance reflects his true feelings and preferences, but it feels so affected and forced to us. As for the big night, we suspect he’ll snap to formation, given the backlash his stunting has started to receive.
