For VOGUE’s April issue, Doja Cat sat down with VOGUE’s Liam Hess to discuss navigating fame, the impact of therapy, her tour, and more.

On navigating fame:
During a shopping trip to Australian beauty store Mecca, Doja Cat’s mood shifts after she spots someone taking a photo from afar.

“It’s when you want to do things, just regular mundane shit, and people feel they’re owed a photo, or your attention, or your smile, a disposition from you. That is the most fascinating part of it for me personally.”

Other stars might have simply paid to shut down the store for an hour. But there was something about her excitement on the way there—and her disappointment as the experience unfolded—that suggested Doja still craves the experience of being able to shop like a normal person. “Yeah, 100%,” she says. “It makes me so upset. Will I go up to somebody and be like, ‘Stop fucking filming me,’ and cuss them out? No, I’m not going to do that. I don’t want to do that. I think I would rather do it in a creative way.” What’s a creative way? “Sometimes I try to look purposefully ugly. I turn it into a game,” she says.

On how therapy has helped her:
“I’m not cured of anything. But it helps me understand why I do the things that I do…I don’t know what I would’ve done without it or where I’d be without it. I’ve been able to see through a lot of the fog that I couldn’t see through before.”

On her definition of a pop concert:
“I’m not sure exactly what a pop concert is anymore. I’ll have one shot before a show if I’m feeling good…that’s the goal. High spirits and positive thoughts.”

So is that her definition of a great pop concert? Powering through against the odds? “No,” she says, firmly. “I think you can do anything with pop.”
