Style File: Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Visit Jordan

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have made a surprise humanitarian visit (it was announced at the last minute) to Jordan in partnership with the World Health Organization. They were invited by the director general of WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, after making a $500,000 donation to causes benefitting Palestinian refugees. These things are usually set up way ahead of time, but Harry and Meghan must have been thrilled to get out in front of cameras doing good work this week of all weeks, what with his uncle being arrested. Being a modern royal is all about PR and these two have suffered some of the worst of the modern era, so we’ll be crass about it and cheer them on while they get to be the good royals for once. Still, the fact that it was an unannounced tour does tend to raise questions about the timing and how quickly they pulled this one together. Hope it doesn’t blow up in their faces (again). One of their stops was at QuestScope Youth Center at the Za’atari refugee camp, which is home to displaced Syrians.

And we are not so shallow as to treat this like a fashion moment. We will, however, talk about what she wore when they attended a World Health Organization roundtable with key donors and humanitarian partners:

It’s nice. We really can’t get mad at it, not even the lack of color, which is her longstanding preference. The differing weights of the textiles bug a little but that’s getting into seriously nitpicky territory. It feels appropriate for the setting and the climate and it helps her stand out in photos without being ostentatious about it. He could have at least worn shoes with laces. Those things are recliner slippers.
