Marty Supreme star Gwyneth Paltrow and Song Sung Blue star Kate Hudson posed the on the red carpet at the Santa Barbara Film Festival Arlington Artist of the Year Award. They each, in their own way, worked the hottest red carpet trend of exactly three years ago.

It’s extremely, probably deliberately evocative of her ’90s style, including her infamous pink Oscar dress. We like the idea of it, it has a lightly retro-mod bridesmaid quality to it that feels a little fresh for her. But the execution of that sheer top is shockingly terrible. Are all of the hems supposed to be that uneven? And if so, why? If you take a step back, she’s got perfect posture (because of course she does) but the outfit makes her look like she’s slouching all over. In unrelated news, we are not loving the return of severe hair on the red carpet. As always, blowouts aren’t required, but this ensemble has a lightness to it that the styling lacks.

This may be the platonic ideal of a Kate Hudson dress. It’s romantic and Boho, with a vaguely rocker chick undertone to it. It plays to all of her strengths as well as her own persona as well as her personal and professional history. We’re not even suggesting that we love this dress. We might even go so far as to say we don’t like it. The combination of dusty pink and brown is an extremely tricky one, especially for the pale gals. Those swag-like rows of trim look very craftsy to our eyes and also over done. We don’t think the one’s below the waist are needed at all. But it really couldn’t be more perfect for her. Evidence that she knows exactly what to do with this dress: the styling, which is low-key, but at the same level of the garment. Heightened hippie glam without being referential or costumey about it. She looks pretty and we hope she has the nerve to dress like this on Oscar night.
