We’re of two minds about the dress Hacks star Jean Smart wore to the Golden Globes. That’s probably a good thing, since there are two of us, but our point here is that we go back and forth on the dress’s qualities:

One the one hand, it’s about as classic a grande dame gown as you’ll find. Everything about it says “Lifetime Achievement Award,” which means it’s not exactly inappropriate for a woman her age, but it does feel more than a little fusty. On the other hand, we gasped when we saw her in it because it legitimately looks very pretty on her. We’re not sure we love the beading or the beige footwear, and we think her hair looks oddly understyled. We don’t necessarily think a pendant was absolutely needed here, but a bit of sparkle at the decolletage would have been welcome. If nothing else, it might have brought a bit more attention to the “Be Good” pin several stars wore to commemorate Renee Good.
