Buckingham Palace Windsor Castle state banquet, darlings! And we all know what that means, don’t we? Tiaras, sashes, and gowns in flag colors! Really, there’s not much separating it aesthetically from your average beauty pageant. Bill and Cathy joined the rest of the fam at the Palace to welcome President Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron for a big, splashy royal dinner.

This all appears to be very much in order. The red looks fantastic on her. We find that Cathy’s formal choices tend to get the most criticism because she’s committed to a retro, minimalist royal style. In other words, she picks the gowns solely to show off the medals, sashes and jewelry. The results don’t tend to make for the most stylish of ensembles, but they’re always extremely appropriate and very royal in tone. Let’s face it: there’s no dress that’s going to unify all of the regalia and jewelry that she has to wear, so as blank a canvas as possible is a smart choice. This is the one venue where we feel like her style approach makes the most sense. You want an event like a state dinner to have a timeless quality to it. You want everyone there to look like they belong there. Classic, boring gowns are the right way to go. It’s when she’s out in the world meeting people that we think she should loosen up a little and try for trendier looks.
