We’ve spent years yelling on social media (and getting yelled at in response) that the Met Gala is not a costume ball and that a hyper-focus on whether or not the attendees are on theme tends to miss the point of the evening, which is for designers to display the most sickening pieces they can devise in order to achieve maximum exposure for the celebrities whose tickets they paid for. To be fair, it’s perfect normal and expected to note whether an outfit fulfills the theme (we do it all the time), but we really must stress that it’s not the point of the evening. All of this is a preamble to the observation that Wicked star Cynthia Erivo opted to just be spectacular for the evening.
We have no doubt that there’s some sort of explanation that ties this look to the themes of the exhibit or gala, but we think the main point of this design is obvious: it’s to make Cynthia Erivo look amazing. Mission accomplished, we’d say. Besides, the lady spent all of 2024 on a theme-dressing tour. We can’t blame her for just wanting to wear a kickass gown that suited her. The jacket is a stunner and we love the slightly bizarre shoulder treatment. The boots really make the look.
