Like her Wicked co-star Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande did what we expected, except she exceeded our expectations, and then she went and did it a second time.

We figured she’d show up in some sort of take on the Glinda gown, but we were pleasantly surprised that she chose something so unusual, with such a high fashion feel to it. It isn’t “just” some poofy princess gown; it’s genuinely interesting. It’s also impeccably fitted and rendered. We like that the jewelry is so demure. A design like this doesn’t need a lot of distractions.

But we never expected to see her in a ruby slippers gown. Wicked sticks to the original silver slippers, so there was never any reason for her to indulge in this kind of theme-dressing for the promo tour, but since she was opening the show singing “Over the Rainbow,” we suppose the temptation to do a Judy homage was too great. It looks gorgeous on her and, like Erivo’s wedding gown on stage, made for a refreshing change of pace after a year of insipid pinks. Having said that, the shoe element is one of the dumbest things we’ve ever seen. This is the problem with theme-dressing. It has no subtlety to it at all. It always defaults to being really obvious.
