Oscars 2025: Ladies in Red

We’ve been handing out Oscars spotlights posts left and right all day, but if we don’t start grouping some of the attendees together, we’ll still be writing about the 2025 Oscars when nominating starts for 2026. Unfortunately, if you’re talking about trends for the Academy Awards red carpet this year, the biggest one was “For God’s sake, don’t wear a color.” Granted, we live in dark times and Hollywood is still reeling from the wild fires, so we can understand if bold, bright colors weren’t really what the mood called for. The only consistent hue found on the red carpet is the one that matches it, that old perennial, ladies in red. Let’s assess these scarlet women, shall we?

It’s a beautiful shade and a very elegant design, but honestly, it’s a little dowdy and aging on her.

This feels like a somewhat simple, get-the-job-done sort of gown, which is probably the type of dress she prefers the most. It suits her unfussy style and the shade looks great on her. We don’t mind a basque waist, but the plunge on this one is awfully deep.

It’s a gorgeous shade and a dazzlingly dramatic shape that suits her needs and lets her be as glam as she wants to. And of course she’s wearing the ruby slippers. The dramatic red lining is a sharp and smart touch.

All of the other reds were brilliant and bright, so this deep wine velvet made a nice change of pace and allowed her to stand out. It’s as simple a design as you’ll find anywhere, with the textile and the jewelry doing all the work. She looks great.

Not crazy about the shape, the drape, or the puckery seams.

Pure, drop-dead sexy flawlessness in the old school style.

It’s different, and kind of cute, but it feels a but overdesigned and we never think capes or trains look right with short skirts, especially huge ruffled capes like this one. Interesting belt, though.
