Welcome to the sweet life of Macaulay Culkin and Brenda Song. Both are generation-defining child stars who rose to fame in their respective roles as Kevin McCallister and London Tipton. Several decades (and many roles) later, the two are madly in love with two kids. So who better to be on the cover of COSMOPOLITAN’s Love Issue?!
Marking the first time in Cosmo history that a romantic couple appears together on the cover, the notoriously private and widely beloved longtime couple is finally ready to loudly celebrate love—and celebrate each other—together, opening up to writer Hunter Harris about supporting each other, their love story lore, and why they’re not married…yet.
Macaulay on their notoriously private relationship: “That the public is like, ‘Wait, they’re together and they have kids?’ Good. That means we did our job.”
Brenda on how their relationship sometimes shocked even her: “There was a point in time where I was like, ‘I must be in a simulation! I have two children with Macaulay Culkin!’”
On how they met, in 2015 at actor Seth Green’s house after Dads, Seth and Brenda’s short-lived FOX sitcom, got canceled:
Brenda: “He was trying to be funny about our show being canceled and I was not having it.”
Macaulay: “She was thoroughly unimpressed by me is what I will say.”
Brenda on how her impression of Macaulay shifted, a few years after they first met, when he gave her some of his journals to read in her spare time: “I saw this person he put out there—it was a product of this armor that he’s put on to protect himself. But I could see that that wasn’t really who he was; I could see these glimpses of this really interesting, very sensitive, very intelligent, artistic person that he doesn’t really let show.”
Macaulay on first knowing he loved Brenda: “I’d never felt this way before. I believed in her. I mean, I believed in people before, but I believed in her down to my bone marrow. You know what I mean? I put it behind the armor though, behind that shield.”
Brenda on Macaulay being the better listener: “He listens to me, and obviously I’m talking all day….”
On how they support each other’s careers:
Brenda: “I’ve had to hustle my entire life being an Asian American actress in Hollywood. I’ve just always had to be very proactive. But [turning to Mack] I feel like you help me chill out, and I help bring out that [fire] in you.”
Mack: “Brenda is encouraging in a way I’d never been encouraged before.”
Brenda: “We’re proud of one another!”
On why they wanted to do Cosmopolitan’s Love Issue cover:
Brenda: “This is Mack’s quote. This was literally his quote yesterday: He said, ‘Honey, we have to do this cover. It’s for the mantel, for our boys.’”
Macaulay: “It’s nice to do a love inventory right now. I like hearing nice things about me from you, and vice versa.”
On meeting at the right time in their lives:
Macaulay begins: “If I met you 10 years earlier…”
Brenda and Macaulay simultaneously: “We would’ve hated each other.”
Brenda on how her relationship with Macaulay has made her a “bigger person”: “When I met Mack, there was so much more of me that I hadn’t figured out. He made me such a bigger person and I was like, Oh my god. I didn’t realize that there were so many things I didn’t know about myself.”
Macaulay to Brenda on his unwavering love and support for her: “I got your back no matter what. I’ll do whatever you say you want to do….I want the things that you want. I’m in this to the end, to the very end.”
