Timothee Chalamet, clearly confused after that whole lookalike contest thing, joined his A Complete Unknown co-stars Elle Fanning and Monica Barbaro at the New York premiere, where they pretended not to know him.

So. This happened. Perhaps this is meant as a cheeky response to the very idea of method dressing and we should take it in good humor. After all, we’ll be the first ones to tell you that a red carpet is not a fashion event, but a publicity event and he certainly generated his share of it with this goofy-ass look. It’s a recreation of something Bob Dylan wore to the 2003 Sundance Film Festival, which is so odd and offbeat a choice that we kind of have to respect it for its cheekiness. On the other hand, it also kinda feels like he’s making fun of the person he’s portraying by dressing up as an old-man version of him, in a look that was widely derided at the time. As we’ve said many a time before when complaining about so-called “method-dressing,” it’s not stylish. It’s not even fashion. It’s quite literally a costume – and we don’t think the fashion industry is likely to keep supporting these stunts because it gets them virtually no publicity or branding. Sorry, but he just looks dumb.

It’s pretty. At this point, anything his co-stars are wearing is going to look great in comparison, so it’s hard for us to work up any quibbles. No, we wouldn’t have rec’d this shade of yellow for her. The pendant and the bold lip to a lot to keep her from looking washed out or sallow.

She finally conceded to a little bit of theme-dressing by ditching the hottie frocks and going for something with a boho, hippie-dippy vibe to it. It’s not our favorite style of dress and we’d like it more if it weren’t in that bridal-toned off-white, but it’s pretty and she looks great in it. We’re not sure that pendant works.
