Part ONE is here! The rest of our Academy Museum Gala coverage is here! Let’s put this one to bed, people!
Anna Kendrick in Monique Lhuillier
This is great! We sound surprised because we tend to find Lhuillier designs to be pretty bland and we think she tends to make very timid style choices for herself.
Ariana DeBose in David Koma
Meh. Generic and stale.
Ayo Edebiri in Thom Browne
LOVE the hair. It’ s an interesting design, and we mostly like it, but we hate the raw edges and we think this would be more effective in black.
Chrissy Teigen (in Andrew Kwon) and John Legend (in Frère)
She tends toward the tacky, so this is a pretty nice turn for her. But the train feels like an afterthought and we’re not a hundred percent convinced on that handkerchief semi-peplum.
Demi Moore in Prada
Love the color, but the fit is off and the white lining is glaring.
Elizabeth Banks in Mugler
Mugler designs are tough to work on a red carpet and we don’t think this one suits her. The white hair also doesn’t seem to be the best choice for her.
Elizabeth Olsen in Nina Ricci
Gorgeous.
Emily V. Gordon (in Saloni) and Kumail Nanjiani (in Zegna)
They’re always so cute together. That’s a gorgeous velvet on her and the style evokes the 1940s, which is never a bad choice for a Hollywood event.
Gal Gadot in Loewe
Bedsheet with a hoopskirt. And ugly shoes to boot.
H.E.R. in Zuhair Murad
Another gorgeous ’40s-inspired design. She looks great, but we don’t think that’s the best color choice for her.
Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara (in Vintage Givenchy Couture)
Sorry, but she looks stupid standing there in those massive panties. The dress would be so pretty if it had been lined. He’s fine.
Kathryn Newton in Sophie Couture
Very pretty. We love the necklaces, although a few might be too long. We go back and forth on the shoes. Fun or tacky?
Kerry Washington in Carolina Herrera
We don’t love hi-lo skirts, but this is pretty great. We just think the mini needs to be a little longer for proportional purposes.
Kylie Jenner in Vintage Thierry Mugler
Ew.
Marion Cotillard in Chanel
It’s fine. The sheerness of the skirt isn’t terrible, but we don’t see what it adds to the design. Just line it.
Mindy Kaling in Vintage Versace
Looks pretty great to us, although the bust gets a little busy.
Natasha Lyonne in Valentino
Love the dress, love the hair, hate the gloves.
Nicole Kidman in Balenciaga Couture
Getting witchy with it, which is exactly where her style sweet spot lies. We don’t love the hair, but she can make a relatively plain black gown sing.
Olivia Wilde in Erdem
An unexpected color and shape. We like it, but the bustline feels unresolved and the spaghetti straps look off on a dress with this much volume to it.
Pamela Anderson in The Row
It’s a little on the blankety side. We think minimalist styles suit her clean face better, but this one’s not working.
Quinta Brunson in Carolina Herrera
Fabulous. We usually hate fabric flowers, but this one is perfect.
Sarah Paulson (in Prada) and Holland Taylor
This has nothing to do with her body, because she’s pulling it off just fine, but we don’t think crop tops really suit her. It just doesn’t feel like her style to us. The skirt is the typical space-taking, slightly off-putting fashion she tends to like, but the top doesn’t look like it goes with it. Holland is always well turned out although we really don’t like the colors here.
Taraji P. Henson in Tamara Ralph Couture
Love a good disco ball gown. She looks hot, but we think the plunge is a little too deep. The flower isn’t needed at all and distracts from the design.
Uma Thurman in Fendi Couture
That color looks amazing on her, but we feel like the bodice needs a little zhuzhing and arranging.
