Please rise for Her Excellency. Pope Tilda has returned to the Venice Film Festival, to promote her Pedro Almodovar-directed film The Room Next Door. It pleases us to report that she has returned to her pontifical ways. Let us assess.

The Pontiff can take the most basic of shapes and styles and render them starker and stranger just by putting them on. You hand this to, we don’t know…let’s say Zendaya, to pick a name out of a hat, and it would come off cute and chic with the right kind of styling. On Pope Tilda, it looks like she’s playing a lawyer on Star Trek. We like how simple the styling is and how well it works with the pieces. We’re a little disappointed by the choice of a plain black pump, but we suppose anything with more personality would throw off the balance.

She’s in her monochromatic era, it would seem. Normally, we’d be against someone stepping onto a red carpet in an all-gray outfit, but this is a particularly flattering dove gray that looks great on her. Again, our impulse is to suggest breaking up the color with a little contrast, but every time we try to picture different pants or shoes, it feels less interesting. We hate the ruffled edges of the jacket, but it’s an interesting piece – on her, anyway. It does feel a bit long, though.
