We’re always adamant about maintaining the line separating fashion critique from costume design critique because they each have extremely different goals and methods. But in order to make a point about how the costume design of And Just Like That… tends to pale in comparison to the glory days of Pat Field on Sex and the City, we have to critique one of the outfits worn here on style grounds. Cynthia Nixon and Sarah Jessica Parker were photographed yesterday on location in New York shooting the upcoming third season of the show.

SJP’s outfit is whatever. Carrie actually would wear that goofy skirt, although we question whether she’d choose any other item she’s sporting. But our focus here is on Cynthia Nixon’s look. One thing we’ve noticed about the costume design on this show is how much they tend to overdo Miranda’s style. Bottom line: she’d wear that dress, but she’d never be so fussy or matchy with all of her accessories. There’s no need for a scarf or a belt and neither of them look all that great with the dress. If anyone in the cast knows the value of a good flat shoe, it would be her. Isn’t she doing like legal aid work now? Does this look like a lawyer fighting for social justice? Does it look like Miranda? It’s like everyone on the show dresses in the same over-the-top, wildly over-accessorized style of Carrie Bradshaw.
