All your favorite stars of color came out to the African-American Film Critics Awards! Why, yes! That was shady as hell of us! We realize that the stars can’t hit every film critics awards ceremony during awards season, but it’s pretty cringey that none of the white awards-track stars deigned to make an appearance for this one. Anyway, let’s judge all of the fabulous people who did show up.
Ava DuVernay in Alberta Ferretti
It’s very low-key elegant. She’s toned down her style considerably in the last couple of years, but she’s still the best-dressed director in the world.
Colman Domingo
Well alright, Colman Domingo.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph
It’s a little simpler than some of her more exuberant choices and we think we like that better for her. The color looks great. The shoes should’ve been anything but black pumps.
Erika Alexander
We’re usually not fans of hair dyed to match one’s outfit or the reverse, picking an outfit that matches one’s hair. But we love this dress and we think her hair is super-cute. You can see our dilemma here.
Jeffrey Wright in Etro
Look, he looks fine (in every sense of the word) every time he steps out and this is a lovely outfit, but we’d swear he’s just wearing the same things over and over again.
Jessica Betts and Niecy Nash-Betts
We’re also not normally fans of couples who dress to match (What can we say? We’ve got a thing about matching), but they never fail to look spectacular together.
Justice Smith
Super cute. We don’t love the shiny textile, but other than that, we have no notes. The grooming is flawless.
Lily Gladstone in Carolina Herrera
She’s very much in her “I’m going to take up space” phase of her campaigning and good for her. It’s a bold and sort of pretty look, but we don’t love the shade of yellow or the big waist bow.
Misty Copeland
This is fabulous and has a real sense of sophistication to it.
Roy Wood Jr.
Well done. No notes.
Ryan Michelle Bathe in Saiid Kobeisy
It’s a chic gown – or it would be without the bustbow.
Sterling K. Brown
Looking fine (again, in every sense of the word).
