Governors Awards 2024: The Directors

We tend to talk about directors on the red carpet fairly infrequently and we almost never give any of them a spotlight post, but this has to be the first time in over 15 years of red carpet commentary that we featured a post with nothing but directors. 2023 was a year in which female directors made history (with Greta Gerwig’s Barbie topping all previous box office numbers), but it was also a year in which a notably high number of them made critically acclaimed films with heavy awards buzz. To these three stylish directices, we would also add Celine Song, who directed Greta Lee in Past Lives. Unforch, she didn’t hit this red carpet, which is a shame, because she’s no less stylish than these three. Sure, we could have included Christopher Nolan here, because he’s an unusually stylish director himself, but he’s also something of a boring dresser. Not so with these three.

She has never been seen in public looking anything less than impeccable, fierce, and completely on point. She’s the most stylish film director currently working, by far. She looks stunning here, but we can’t say we love whatever’s happening on her arms. We can’t even tell if those things are part of the dress or part of the gloves.

Gorgeous. Possibly one of the more conventionally glam looks we’ve seen from her in a while. No notes.

This is fantastically chic, in a severe, minimalist, “stern governess” sort of way. It suits her terrifically and it signals that she’s a prestige director who’s ready to move on from Barbie Land.
