She’s on her way. Killers of the Flower Moon star Lily Gladstone picked up the Best Actress in a Motion Picture Golden Globe last night, making history as the first indigenous woman to do so and kicking off what many watchers consider to be a straight shot to the Oscar. She dressed accordingly.

It sure as hell isn’t for us to say when and how she should use fashion to pay tribute to indigenous artisans (something she has been doing on and off throughout the KotFM publicity tour), but we think it’s notable how conventionally elegant her style is for the first major awards show of the season. Everything about this screams prestige, which makes it a particularly powerful choice when she gets up there and starts her speech in the Blackfeet language. That combination of language and image is intensely poignant, sending a loud and clear message of “We belong here.”  The dress is minimalist elegance (and a skosh too tight across the bust) which would have come off dull on its own, but that massive opera coat and about a pound of diamonds do a whole lot to give it the grandeur and luxuriousness the whole look provides.

Once again, we have to note that Leo rarely poses with co-stars and tries his best to avoid red carpets completely, something he can do because of his high standing and super-stardom. It’s genuinely touching how much and how often he wants to be photographed next to her. That’s how you use your privilege to elevate someone else.
