Da’Vine Joy Randolph? Welcome back to the awards track. The star of The Holdovers is getting raves and buzz for her performance in the film and since the Gotham Awards are one of the opening salvos to awards season, we think we can safely call this a campaigning gown.
It’s okay. The color looks great, but the shine brings it down a little. We don’t love that waist detail. It’s possible she chose a dress with draping across the waist for her own comfort level, but we think there are better ways to feel comfortable in a form-fitting dress. The neckline calls for a necklace or pendant. We can’t say we’d find this dress spotlight-worthy under different circumstances, but if we’re going to be writing an “Ology” post about her in a few months, the fashion industry is put on notice: we better see some high end frocks and gowns practically thrown at her in the interim. This isn’t terrible, but we think she can do (and deserves) better.
