Netflix has dropped the full trailer and more key art for Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein biopic Maestro and ooooh, GIRL! Smell that prestige:
It positively reeks of it.
Look, this whole production looks absolutely amazing and we won’t suggest that it’s not going to deserve the almost assuredly rapturous response come awards season. But without detracting from what looks like spectacular work by Carey Mulligan, it all feels rather reverse-engineered for Oscars consideration, which is probably unavoidable when the names Spielberg and Scorsese are listed on the producer credit line. We don’t mean to sound dismissive. We think the style of filmmaking is not perhaps grabbing us from these previews, but there’s no denying we’ll be seated for it and we’ll almost certainly find plenty of reasons to love it – not just Mulligan’s hopefully Oscar-nominated performance but the gorgeous production and costume design.
