As we noted when talking about Nicki Minaj’s look yesterday, wearing a bridal ensemble to the VMAs has a history almost as long as the VMAs themselves. It may, in fact, be one of Madonna’s most lasting contributions to the culture. It feels like this homage (which is, to be fair, as much to Britney as it is to her) is likely to outlive her. We’re probably less than a decade away from young pop stars showing up at the VMAs in bridally inspired looks, having absolutely no idea why the practice originated. It’ll just be something pop stars do; an item to check off the list. Bride at the VMAs. Done. But there’s no denying the historic nature of a Black queer man doing it. He may be the last person left to make it appear a little shocking. The Bible bag is probably gilding the lily on that front, but we can’t fault him for tweaking as many noses as he can. People have been wielding that little book against the gender nonconforming forever. May as well make an accessory out of it for your fuck-you outfit.
