Prince Harry and Meghan Duchess of Sussex made their first sort of appearance in a while when they were filmed making congratulatory calls on behalf of their Archewell Foundation to members of the inaugural Responsible Technology Youth Power Fund cohort. Archewell is on the Fund’s advisory committee.

That’s all well and good, but we’re here for more shallow reasons, of course. Before we get to the style choices, we’ll just note that they really should be doing much more of this sort of thing and making it public. Of course it can come off self-serving or insincere to their detractors, but it’s no more so than any other royal engagement or patronage. We’ve said from the beginning of their retreat that they need to find a way to apply the royal duties they both liked doing to a particularly American style of celebrity. This is better for them than any memoir, podcast or docu-series. Just do the work and make it public so people can hear about the charities or initiatives you’re focusing on. That’s the job, as we see it. In semi-related news, this little pair of getups feels like one of the more overt attempts to meld royal style with the SoCal Casual style Meghan has always preferred.

Look at how well coordinated they are. The royals are generally well-coordinated, although Cathy tends to take it to military levels with her branch of the family tree. In fact, Meghan claimed in Harry & Meghan that she favored neutrals for royal duties because she considered what the Queen would be wearing and dressed not to outshine her, which obviously never passed the smell test because she wears neutrals constantly. Harry has put in more than his usual effort. The shirt fits really well and the sleeves have been meticulously rolled up for him. It looks to us like he’s wearing corduroy pants, which gives the whole look a much more photogenic aspect to it. If you’re going to dress in bland styles and colors, it’s never a bad idea to add a little bit of subtle richness and texture. As for the Duchess, we do think it’s kind of funny that she’s doing this in essentially a high-end track suit. We think we’d probably be a bit more critical of the pants if this were a red carpet or photo call situation, but she’s sitting down in a brief and highly edited video presentation, so they’re fine. All of the interest is in the top, which has a nice drape to it. Believe it or not, we’d actually be fine with the turtleneck if it were about a third less bulky than it is. The very subtle gold pieces are well chosen and her hair looks amazing. A pretty good job on both their parts. It’s all super casual, but rather surprisingly well curated.
