After years of documenting her journey through all the various iterations of classic princess drag, we probably could have predicted that this McQueen gown worn by Elle Fanning at Cannes is pretty much her dream dress.

She tends to like her princess fantasies dramatic and mostly neutral in colors, which makes this part of a long line of similar looks in her red carpet repertoire. A piece in Vogue UK outlines how Elle saw a version of this dress walk the runway in the Fall 2023 show and worked with McQueen creative director Sarah Burton to produce this version, which is much more suited to her than the original. Personally, we think the neutral skirt color lets her and the design down. The bodice is insanely detailed and we think a similar skirt in black would probably set off the pewter color of the embellishments off much better. Still, there’s no denying this girl knows how to bring the drama to an international red carpet. She tends to be much more explosively “fashionista” in her approach here at Cannes than she ever is when she’s doing standard promo work in the States. It’s like you get her on the Riviera and suddenly she’s giving Cate Blanchett a run for her money.
