Oscars 2023: Rihanna in Alaïa

This is definitely one of those looks that come off completely different in the light of day. Rihanna arrived at the Oscars as a nominee and performer, for her song “Lift Me Up” from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack. She wore a different gown to deliver a beautiful rendition of the song, but when she showed up last night, we really loved the Alaïa she was wearing.

We’re afraid we have to walk back that sentiment a little. The main issue for us is the fit. It’s clearly very bad in the bust and while we think that skirt is fitting her exactly how she wants it to, we think it would be better if those hip slits offered her a little more room. We are also not in love with the visible sleeve seam. Having said all that, we DO love the design and how it both highlights her pregnant body and also binds her in a sort of armor that gives off very Wakandan warrior vibes. In a further nitpick, the earrings are pretty but we think this look called for something bolder if not harder.
