While the real deal were out upholding the British military, their fictional younger versions were seen gallivanting all over St. Andrews this week. Ed McVey and Meg Bellamy are shooting some of their first scenes as Prince William and Kate Middleton for the upcoming (final?) season of The Crown.
We have to laugh, because they really nailed Kate’s schoolgirl tryhard style period. As we noted when the first pictures of Ed in the role popped up, the palaces Buckingham and Kensington are likely to be livid about this and we’ll be treated to a whole bunch of angry “royal insiders” ranting about it to the press when the season drops, as if the English haven’t been parodying and portraying the royals in popular entertainment since Shakespeare’s day (and well before it). Given their popularity and her status as a commoner, we wonder if the show will soft-pedal their story or if showrunner Peter Morgan will do what he always does with non-royals on the show: make them seem like total rubes who don’t know how to use a salad fork (see: the Kennedys and the Thatchers).
