We don’t care what anyone else says, we love Sam Smith’s big queer body positivity. Like their fellow disruptor Lizzo, they make a point to take up as much space as possible when they’re serving a look. For the Brit Awards, rather than rely on voluminous yards of fabric to make his point, Sam turned to Kerala born London menswear designer Harri to blow things up.
Literally. Much like the Kansai Yamamoto jumpsuit David Bowie made famous, from which this look is taking some clear inspiration, this is less about wearable fashion and more about stagewear as art form. The latex evokes fetishwear, which is very much a part of Smith’s current focus in both fashion and music, but it also works as a form of ridicule towards the idea of the perfect male form. It feels queer in every sense of the word.
