Rihanna at the Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show

Rihanna returned to the stage for the first time in half a decade for the 2023 Super Bowl half time show. Although “stage” is perhaps a bit of a misnomer, since “Rihanna returned to the floating performing barge” doesn’t have quite the same ring to it. The NFL has decided to be little bitches about it and not let us embed the video, but you can watch it here. We tend to think it’s worth your time because Ri has such an amazing back catalog of songs, although there was an immediate backlash due to her “low-key” performance. Putting aside the surprise reveal of her pregnancy and even the fact that Ri has never been a big choreo girl, people need to be reminded that sometimes, some singers are there to sing, full stop. Elaborate choreography for stage shows is always fun to see, but it really shouldn’t be the only criterion for a good performance. We thought she sounded amazing. As for the look:

It’s both cute and dramatic. The all-red ensemble was a great way of making her stand out from very far away. The jumpsuit styling seems like a fairly deliberate way of announcing her pregnancy. We love the diamond brooches and coordinating watch dressing it up. The massive coat was an homage to Andre Leon Talley, which is amazing just for existing. Did anyone – including ALT himself – ever think a tribute would be paid to him at a Super Bowl halftime show?
