The entertainment community threw itself a ton of back-patting parties this weekend and we have an enormous surplus of high-end red carpetry to judge. You’d think we’d want to do a bunch of rundowns just to thin out the ranks a little, but we feel compelled to kick things off with a spotlight post on the history-making Best Lead Actress winner, partially because she’s the first Asian woman to win it but mostly because she picked a frock that more or less demands discussion.

Look, she is fabulous, the jewelry is drop-dead gorgeous and the dress is striking. All of that is stipulated. But come on, she looks like she’s covered in packing material. It feels like she’s supposed to pull out a crystal vase or delicate teacup from inside her dress. Our cats would give just about anything for the opportunity to destroy this gown.
