Princess Catherine joined her husband Prince William at London’s Guildhall for a ceremony commemorating the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Because she knows what she’s doing, she kept the fashion at a nearly undiscussable level.
And by that we mean that she quite deliberately didn’t wear anything of note. An event like this obviously doesn’t call for glamour or style. It calls for respect, which is what her all-black ensemble conveys. But because we’re better at discussing fashion than most, we’re able to find two things worth noting here. The first is that she’s wearing Queen Elizabeth’s pearl earrings. We try not to get too caught up in “She’s wearing the Queen’s favorite tiara as a touching tribute” nonsense that the press tends to foist on the royals. Royals wear the jewelry pieces of dead royals not to pay tribute to them but to signal that they now “own” (or at least, have access to) them. The whole system is based on people dying off and other people moving up the ladder to take on the raiment. But in this case, we would bet she really is wearing these, if not in tribute then in remembrance. The other notable thing here is that she’s wearing pants to a solemn and important occasion, making this something of a watershed moment in royal pants-wearing.
